I had invasive ductal carcinoma stage 1 grade 3. It was er and pr negative. I had lumpectomy once and margins were not clear. Had lumpectomy number 2 and they found DCIS with cancerization of the lobuleat lateral margin. Then they did a simple mastectomy all of this within 4 weeks. Now I start chemo on 9/9/2003. Has anyone else had this kind of experience?

My experience was quite different, but the current philosophy gravitates in the direction of performing the least invasive procedure that will get the job done. That can lead to a series of operations until the point is reached where the problem is adequately resolved. Sometimes it is impossible to tell what the whole picture is based upon the initial biopsy of one area. Hope this helps. Love, Denise

The good news is that they can't take anymore of that boob, it's gone! The above answer was correct. Until they get the tissue under the microscope they are only giving an educated guess about what is or is not in it. I had invasive ductal as well and I opted for the mastectomy when the biopsey did not have clear margins. Good thing I did or I would have had to have gone through the 3 surgeries like you. I had cancer in situ and calcifications which are beleived to be pre cancer. # surgeries are rough and you would have chosen the mastectomy right off if you knew what you know now , but.......... I, too, was stage 1 grade 3 er positive and pr negative. Within a month I had the biopsy and then mastectomy. My surgeon (whom I love) said that because of the grading a mastectomy was my safest option. He also found three more tumors that were there that were not invasive. Those three luckily were okay. One thing I've had to make myself remember is that it is all being done to save us. I wish you well with chemo. Drink plenty of water to flush your system. So many told me the same thing on this site. I didn't see what a difference it would make...believe me it helps. Wishing you well. Angel

I also have invasive ductal carcinoma. Mine was stage 2A, but I decided to treat it aggressively with a mastectomy and 8 rounds of chemo. I was lucky that the lymph nodes were negative. I am estrogen and progesterone negative which is why I decided to treat the cancer so aggressively. I do not regret my decision and my chemo is almost finished (Sept. 22) I will pray for you that you have peace in the decisions you make about your treatment. God Bless You. Remember - Attitude is Everything. Believe that you will win!!! I know I will. Susan

My case was very similar to yours....Stage I, grade 3 and both er and pr negative. I had a lumpectomy and then a second re-excision to obtain better margains. But I got lucky and the margins were great after the second procedure, so I didn't require a mastectomy after that. But a woman in my breast cancer support group had exactly your experience - two surgeries followed by a mastectomy. As the others said, they just can't tell until the path reports are in. But I'm sorry you had to go through all that. I finished all treatment this past March 1 (6 months of chemo and 33 radiation treatments) and am wishing you good luck with yours. Sounds like your on the right track....you just took a few extra side trips! Ellen

I also have invasive ductal carcinoma Stage 3 and 1 positive lymph node. I also had 2 lumpectomies until I received clear markings, and I am also er & pr negative. I am on my 3rd out of 4 chemos (last one 9/18), and then I start 30 rounds of raditation. I agree with all the previous responses. Also have faith in your Doctors and in your personal decission and do what you feel is right for you. Keep mentally positive (that's 90% of your cure) and fight with everything you have, and pray hard, he listens. I wish you good luck, I will keep you in my prayers and I know you will be fine. I was just diagnosed yesterday with invasive carcinoma stage 1B .O lymph nodes seem to be involved . I was told lumpectomy , mastectomy or double mastectomy are my choice. It is triple negative and fast growing. I’m thinking double mastectomy . Any advice. I just am overwhelmed . Surgery scheduled for Oct 7
