What about after nephrectomy?

Seven years ago, I had my right kidney removed, and the last time I saw the doctor for that was when he removed the staples. I changed doctors about a year ago, but even the new doctor shows little interest in my remaining kidney. He did order a creatinine test after a CT scan for a fibroid, but that's all. The result was a little elevated, and he took me off Glucophage. I wouldn't worry except that I've gained a lot of weight I can't explain, and I just started having backaches again only now on the left side. I figure you all know and can tell me -- what do you see the doctor for now that you're a survivor of kidney cancer and how often?

    The American Cancer Society's information states that after treatment for kidney cancer, your doctor will decide which tests you should have and how often based on your cancer's original stage and response to treatment. Chest x-rays, CT scans of the abdomen and chest, and other imaging studies may be taken to watch for a local recurrence, metastasis, or for a new tumor. Blood tests to check kidney and liver function may also be requested.

    It is important for you to report any new symptoms to the doctor right away. These may be the first indication of recurrent cancer or of some side effects of treatment. In either case, the problem can be treated best if it is recognized early.

    Also, it is always your right as a patient to seek a second opinion if you want to be sure you have explored all options for your treatment.

    Talk with your doctor and express your concerns. If you don't get the responce you are looking for, tell him. If he still isn't interested, find a doctor who is. That may seem callous, but I am really blessed with the staff that attended and is attending my case. If I didn't have them, I wouldn't be as comfortable. I'm 6 months healthy and could tell you more, but this is about you. If you need to get in the doctors face, then do it. You are paying for a very special service and you need the best they have. Don't be afraid to ask for it.
