herbs, vitamins, foods?
I am a 46 year old male with a diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer which has spread to several locations. My surgery was June 5th, 2003 where they removed the total thyroid, two fist sized tumors near my esophagus, a partial radical neck surgery, and a nodule in my lung (several remain in the lungs). I am scheduled for TRMI radiation this coming Tuesday for the remaining mass in my neck. Six weeks, five days a week. I guess after that they will do the I-131 for the remaining nodules in the lungs. My questions have to do with nutritional supplements. I am a fighter and want to throw anything and everything at this that can help. I have already begun research and have changed my diet to all organic foods, trying to quit smoking ( with little success, the zyban made me break out in hives) although I have cut down considerably. Is anyone out there following a similar course of action? Anyone using the Flora-essence tea formula for cancer or other supplements with success? I have heard of anti-tumor properties and support for radiation with the spice Turmeric and have added it to my diet. Also "Just Barley", Whey protein, lots of fruit and veggie smoothies. I was told to stay away from the antioxidants until after the radiation because of the release of free radicals. I am so happy to find this site and will share freely any information or help that I can with anyone. Oh, almost forgot. I live on Catalina Island, 25 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, CA. And will need to commute daily for the treatments. Any suggestions for sea sickness?

I find that by eating a healthy diet that seems to work for me - lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein. I limit fats and carbs. Also, I quit smoking the week before my first surgery in 1989 cold turkey once I heard I had cancer. I think you can too - it isn't much good to purge your system with food if you aren't able to do that with toxic things. Good luck with everything. I am sure you will be fine.

I know this is an old post (last post/reply on 8/4/2003), but I have similar questions. I too would like to fight my cancers (HCC and papillary) with anything and everything. I've had two surgeries to remove my thyroid, and am now waiting for my RAI a few weeks from now.LAF64 said:I find that by eating a healthy diet that seems to work for me - lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein. When my sister-in-law was diagnosed with colon, lung, and liver cancer a few years back, she totally changed her diet (cut out sugar, went organic, juiced every day, etc.). I know there's a lot of books and info on the internet about an anti-cancer diet, but have not seen too many posts on this forum about it. My ENDO doesn't think a low sugar diet would help me in terms of my thyroid cancer. So not sure what I should be doing if anything.
Should I be concerned about my diet, other than the low-iodine diet before RAI? Would love to hear everyone's feedback on this.
