My husband is also a Vietnam Vet and we applied for VA benefits last August. He also got prostrate cancer at age 53 and is now 56. It has now gone to the bones and we are waiting for results of biopsies, etc. But those Va benefits really help and will help in the future, as the VA has also approved him for home assistance should the time come that he needs it. It really helps to know that when he can no longer work and we no longer have health insurance, he will be covered by VA health benefits, home help, and the added income.
God bless and I hope everything goes well with your husband.0 -
I have applied to the VA for compensation for Prostate Cancer and resultant surgery. My paperwork was sent in September. The VA has assigned a claim number, my Primary Care physician and Urologist have sent in medical support documentation and I have had my first VA medical exam and blood test the first of April. The VA person that performed my medical exam told me I was doing the right thing. This person told me I should get the results of my medical exam and in about 3 wks. The process is not short, but from indications I have had, so far, it's the right thing to do if your a Vietnam vet. Applications can be filled out on-line through the VA. DO IT!!0

I, too, am a Vietnan vet with prostate cancer. I had an RP last November and just had my VA physical and blood test a few weeks ago. I'm awaiting the decision of the review board as to my degree of disability. I see in the post by ddo that her husband has 100% disability ... anyone else get 100% or is the amount of compensation dependent on other factors?nwlms said:I have applied to the VA for compensation for Prostate Cancer and resultant surgery. I was told, however, that regardless of the amount of compensation awarded, since I am retired from the military, whatever I am awarded, that amount will be deducted from my retirement pay. Great deal, huh?
Congress continually rejects legislation that would correct this situation (it's called concurrent receipt). So I guess retired military folks will continue to pay for their own disability!!!0 -

Your income does not matter if your prostate cancer is service connected. Have you filled a claim for compensation? You must do so or they will not act. You can do so at www.va.gov. Once you have established you have been exposed to Agent Orange the process will start and takes about six months. Your award is retroactive to the date of your claim. A CIB or an "mos" of 11b will normally qualify you automatically. You will receive an awarded of 100% disability. After your treatment you will be called for a follow up exam usually in six months. Your % disability will be recalculated based on your current symptoms.
Example: stress-incontinence with hyper tension will result in a 60% rating. Plus you will receive an additional payment for loss of use of your reproduction organ. You need to go on line and do your homework. Lost of good advice can be found on a search at yahoo under the heading of Agent Orange....Good Luck!
Your income only comes in to the picture for non-service connected claims and health care exams.

I have heard of the concurrent receipt for retired personal although I'm not retired from the military. However, I do have a good friend that is. He now works for the VA in Fl., and knows all the in & outs of processing claims. I'll check with him and see if there some loop hole or special exemption that might benefit you. That "concurrent receipt" is really something that needs to be corrected and is totally unfair.
Regarding my claim, I received a 100% award plus and extra permanent award for "loss of use of my creative organ." The 100% was retro-active to the date of my original claim and lasted through out the treatment. Six months after treatment is completed you get re-evaluated. I was awarded a 60% disability for stress incontinence with hypertension at that evaluation. I don't know if I am going to be evaluated again in the future and I'm currently looking into that aspect.
Again I'll investigate your options and get back to you.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. I had my prostate removed using the Davinci procedure. I applied for disability benefits today with the DAV. I'am hearing so many different stories as to whether or not I will be getting any type of compensation since I had it removed first and then filed a claim. Does anyone know if that is true or not? Thank you in advance, Mark

Thank you in advance, MarkYes, if your DD-214 proves that you were Boots on the ground in Vietnam or if you were on one of the many ship in the navy. Make sure you look at the list Agent Orange conditions that you can file for now. Like Diabeties II, Heart conditions, Neuropathy problems. Some conditions are secondary to the main conditions. In my case i have Prostate cancer and i have Lymph Node cancer , DiabetiesII, heart disease, Neuropathy of the legs and hands, ETC.
So make sure that you file for all your conditions!
Good luck and God bless
