About a dozen years ago I had an autologous BMT for NHL. Since then my health is fine, but I seem to get an inordinate amount of colds, much like I did as a child. Does anyone have a similar experience, or any information on the reconstitution of ones immune sytem and if any immunities are lost or attenuated by a BMT.

    DRB,
I underwent an Autologous Stem-Cell Transplant for NHL in February of 2002. Now that I'm one year out, I've begun having all my childhood immunizations again. Did you get re-immunized?
My doctors have told me that most likely I will be anemic for the rest of my life. I'm taking a daily multi-vitamin, an iron supplement, and I was taking extra folic acid, too.
I did get a cold last October, and it knocked me down for about 15 days.

I had a stem call transplant 5 years ago. I go through phases of getting colds. During the winter months it seems I get a mild to severe cold at least once a month. Last spring I got phneumonia. It took 2 or 3 months to get completly over it. I do take a multiple vitamin and vitamin c everyday. I think it would be much worse if I didn't take them. I have come to terms with the fact that I have a weakened immune system. This is especialy hard because I am a nanny for 2 small children. They bring everything home. If anyone has any suggestions on building up my immune system so it is stronger, I would be very interested. I guess you can take some comfort in that there are others out there just like you. Take care of yourself...........Denise

Almost one year ago, I was diagnosed with SLL/CLL, a small B cell indolent NHL. My father has CLL only. We take Juice Plus, fruit and vegetables in capsule form. Since it is the real thing, not chemically made, it helps boost immune system functions. I rarely get sick, and when I do, I increase the dosage and it shortens the time I'm not well. I actually get better faster than my "well" friends. This is purchased through a distributer (I can help you if you are interested) and it's only approx $38.50/month if you take the regular amount of 2 capsule of each per day. If you can afford it, double the dosage. My oncologist (a lymphoma specialist at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL,) says since it is only food supplements, take as much as you want. My cancer is progressing but very very slowly (my father's not at all), and I'm still on wait and watch for another year. Hope this helps. If you like, email me at Robbiebird@aol.com
