As a mother the last thing you want to hear is that your child (and only child) has a tumor. My daughter Kate was diagnoised with reflux and the doctor told us that is was more than likely a piece of corn in the lobe of her lung but he wanted to be sure. He scheduled an outpatient procedure to go down and look with a scope. While in recovery the doctor came in and told me that it looked like a tumor. I was floored to say the least. She was admitted and then a biopsy was done. The next day we were given the results... a carcinoid tumor. We were immediately sent to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital in Memphis, TN. Kate (age 13yrs old at the time) was extremely brave going through many different test and scans before her surgery. We did not know if she was going to have to go through Chemo or not. The doctors removed the upper lobe of her right lung. The results that came back after her surgery was great news! It was non-cancerous which meant that Kate would not have to go through chemo. Kate will be celebrating her 18th birthday in March and she is doing great! I just wanted to let others out there that are diagnoised with a carcinoid that there is hope. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I'm so glad that you left this message, not for me but for someone else that might be having the same problem. You were very lucky and blessed. I have had cancer of the lungs twice once in each lung but they also removed 1 half of my left lung and a little better than 1/4th of my right lung. I was a lot older than your daughter, and I can tell you that i'm in good health now and my last cancer was in 1991.
My only thought is why did they not do a biopsy so that she didn't have to loose half of her right lung.

    katesmom,
I am very glad to hear the prognosis for you daughter. I am trying to locate a specialist who can help us with my 3 yr old niece. She is having severe symptoms and her allergist said that he thought it was a carcinoid tumor. Now he is backing off this because he says it is so rare in children. We just want to find someone who can help us rule it out. Do you have any suggestions of specialists? Thankyou

Does anyone have a recommendation for a specialist that can assist us with a diagnosis of a 3 year old? An allergist specialist said he thought she had a carcinoid tumor because of her symptoms, he has since backed off because he says it is so rare in children. We just need help finding someone who has seen it in children and can help us? Thanks
