I have a question for you all about swelling.

My arm is starting to swell along with my hand and fingers. I am finding it hard to do things with the baby cuz I can't bend my wrist and straighten my arm out all the way. I am pretty depressed about it. Is this Lymphedema? I hear you can't get rid of it..so I am just suppose to live with this pain now and not being able to move it right?My chemo nurse Friday said to try and hold the baby with my other arm and elevate it as much as possibe. Not sure what to do. Any advise would help.

I know what you're going through...my arm just started to swell also. My Dr. wrote a RX for a compression sleeve to help reduce the swelling. Haven't gotten it yet( go tomorrow), but from what I hear it works well. Hope this helps some. God Bless, Adele

Hi Angel. It sounds like lymphedema, but there are things you can do. Yes, elevation is important. When the arm hangs down, the fluid flows down toward the fingers. Unfortunately, when alot of lymph nodes have been removed ,it's hard for the fluid to flow back up the arm. Elevate means above the heart level. It's not possible to do that all the time but when you're sitting and relaxing and in bed try to rest your arm on pillows above your heart level. You can go for PT and they can massage your arm. There's a massage just for lymphedea. You also may need to be measured for a Jobst sleeve which is an elastic stocking with a glove to be worn to keep the swelling down. It's important to start getting the swelling before it gets bad. Talk to your Oncologist or surgeon. Don't panic. You'll be ok! Let us know how you make out. HUGS!! Cathy Give Skylar a HUG too!

It is important to give that arm more of a rest than you have probably been doing. I have a little swelling in my upper arm and a heavy feeling under the arm, but notice it is worse where I use it alot. I don't have a baby to lift, but the groceries and heavy bags that I forget to do with only the right cause a reaction. You can massage it yourself - also put it up on the back of your chair. I did not find the sleeve helpful but that would be an individual thing.

Good Luck - you got thru so much, I'm sure you will get a handle on this too - but check into physical therapy where they have cancer patients forsome expert advice.

Hi Angel I know the problem very well I have it very bad. I go to a lymphedema clinic myself and it works for me. When I first started my arm and hand was swelled about 3xs it's size. They show you how to massage it and how to bandage it. I wear a sleeve durning the day and bandages at night. This has helped me greatly. I go to the clinic once a month now just for a deep massage and it keeps the swelling down. Hope this helps Judy

Hello Angel, Here in Mo/KS I was referred to a lymphedema clinic by my Onco. I had very little swelling but he thought it very important to stay on top of it. The PT at the clinic had me wrap my arm at night with several layers of elastic wrap and I wore a compression sleeve during the day. For some patients with extreme swelling, there was a machine that actually pumped the fluid away. I went to a water exercise class one night a week and that seemed to help more than anything else. One lady told me that when she gets a little swelling, she just goes swimming and that knocks it down. Talk to your doctor and ask if there is a lymphedema clinic near you. Your health insurance should pay for your therapy. I saw little difference in my arm and stopped going, but I met several ladies there that had received great results from excessive swelling.
