Pregnant with breast cancer

My 32 year old daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer in May and had a mastectomy on May 25. She is 16 weeks pregnant now. The first oncologist said she would have to have chemo. Then she went to Duke for a second opinion and was told the risk of chemo outweighed the benefit. Then, after the doctors at Duke did their own pathology, they found some "ugly" cells and they're worried about waiting until after the baby to start Tamoxifen - they think she should consider doing chemo when the baby is at 24 weeks.

What a roller coaster.... I feel so bad for my daughter as they're really leaving the decision for chemo up to her. She had infiltrating ductal carcinoma 1.3 cm and clear nodes. She is estrogen and progesterone receptive positive.

Does anyone out there have any advice?

MANY have been pregnant now and they have lots of knowledge to draw from. Allot of healthy kids out there enjoying their lives, the mothers still worry about reoccurances. Doesn't seem fair that one can't enjoy the child for the nievity that they bring. Instead a mother who has seen some of the horrores that life can bring and is left wondering and worrying thinking about what is yet to come.

    hello there,
I am pregnant with breast cancer. I finished my 5th treatment of chemo on the 21st if June. I had a mastectomy at 14 weeks, started chemo at 21 weeks and am having my baby next thursday. They baby has been growing great and thru ultrasound find him to be healthy. If you have any other questions I might be able to answer please don't hesitate to ask. The chemo I took was AC and will have Taxol after the baby is born. I wish your daughter the best.

Hi...I've been offline for awhile, but am back now, and have a suggestion. My cancer was infiltrating ductal, 1.1cm with clear nodes, estrogen/progesterone positive, Her-2 Neu negative, and was well-differentiated. According to my oncologist, the size and the well differentiated meant a lot. I was told the current guidelines state that if the tumor is under 2cm and well-differentiated, then they don't recommend chemo. I would certainly check with her oncologist to see if it is well-differentiated. Of course, there are other factors, too, but I would check on that anyway. I have a sister-in-law who, 16 years ago, was diagnosed in about the 4th month. She went to Mayo Clinic and they did a mastectomy and chemo. The baby is a happy, healthy 16 year old, and my sister-in-law is in great health. Does your daughter have Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book? It's really essential reading...helped me immensely. I wish her all the best, and you, too. There's a good website to check out www.mothersdaughters.org It's about mothers supporting daughters with breast cancer. There may be some info you can use.
