Oxaliplatin

Hi:

My husband age 52 (Stage IV Colon Cancer spread to liver which is 50%+ involved) has gone through the standard chemo (5FU, Lecovorin and Irinotecan) for approximately 8 months. His cancer started growing again and they did a resection and one chemoembolization. They are talking about putting him on Oxaliplatin. I'd really like to have any information anyone has. Our Oncologist can't get it since it has not been FDA approved but it sounds like that will happen in the next 6 months or so. We are near the University of Washington and hopefully they will be able to administer it. I'm also concerned that our insurance won't cover it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi, We'll Oxaliplatin is not FDA approved. But we actually turned down the treatment, because the side effects are unknown. I feel in your husbands case he may be a better candate than my father, because he is at stage 3 and only 2 spots were detected in the lympnoodes and were removed. So I made the decidion to try the F5u/LV first. I know they said insurance covers it or the hospital picks up the cost. There is a hospital in Pennsivalyna that is conducting the study for people only who did not respond to the first treatment. I called them and they were nice. I lost the link be you may try to contact them. I wish you the best and your husband. Remember even if you find a place he still has to be randomly selected.
