For My Dad

I'm looking for any input from those who have had radiation treatment for squamous cell cancer (tongue and throat) - for my 76 yr. old father. He had intensive radiation about 18 months ago and is still suffering with heavy mucous production, which he coughs up frequently. Due to this, he still essentially drinks Boost or Ensure and almost no food. We were told that he would always have the dry mouth, but I'm hoping there is something we can do about the horrible coughing and his lack of appetite. Any advise or wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

My husband had radiation therapy in the neck/mouth area. I know that the mucous production is awful - hopefully it has diminished some. My husband's friend recommened papaya - I'm not sure if it's available where you live. But he says that it is the best thing he's eaten since this therapy started. It's sooting to the mouth - I don't think it will help with the mucous though. It is also good for the digestion. Others have recommended Biotene OralBalance for the dry mouth - it's a gel that you use on the inside of the mouth to coat it. Hope this helps.

I don't know if you're still checking these messages but one of the nurses recommended that my husband try a mild solution of lemon & water for the mucous - it helped but you have to be careful if the mouth tissues are damaged or if the solution is too strong because the acidity might compound the problem.
