breast cancer and lupus
I have been recently diagnosed with grade-3 infiltrating ductile breast cancer. I will be visiting a surgeon for the first time on Wednesday and I have been reading some pamphlets about possible treatments.
I have lupus and the pamphlets have mentioned that people with lupus may not be able to have lumpectomies with radiation treatments since the radiation may cause lupus flares.
I was wondering if anyone on the list is also has lupus and what information you could give me.
I also am diabetic, but I have found less information on the possible impact of that illness on treatments.
Thanks for your help!
Melanie

Hi Melanie,
I'm a retired librarian and I like to look up information so altho' I do not have lupus or diabetes but finish radiation tom'w (YEA!), I checked in www.google.com for some information.
Above is a good article on radiation in which they say SOMETIMES a person can have radiation even with lupus - it's relative, not a definite 'no' so a radiation oncologist would be the one to ask.
Good luck - seems you already had enough without cancer too! :-(
Keep us informed as to what you find out.

Thank you so much for the information. It was very helpful. I was able to get in to see my rheumatologist today, and he said that I shouldn't worry about the effects of the radiation therapy, if that's what my oncologist prescribes. He said he's had several patients with both rheumatoid arthritis and lupus who have successfully had radiation therapy.bdean said:Dear Melanie:
