Talking to my 2 1/2 year old about Granddaddy's disease

Howdy:

My father is dying of metastasized melanoma, and has several visible tumors. My family and I are going to visit soon, and I need help explaining things to my daughter, Carla, who is 2 1/2 and loves her Granddaddy.

I've explained that Granddaddy is very sick and that he has big boo-boos, but not to worry, he cannot hurt her. And moreover, he needs her hugs & kisses!

I need guidance, though, about how to prepare her for his transition. I want to be honest, yet talk to her in a way that she can understand. I also worry about traumatizing her at such a tender age.

My father has elected to be cremated, so my daughter won't see his body.

How do I talk to Carla in a way she can relate?

Thanks,

Joe
