Hello,
My name is Kimberly and I am a 9 year survivor of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I am recently married (2 years) and am expecting my first child in December, 2001 at the age of 36. I am looking to meet others who have faced the issue of whether or not to have a child following cancer treatment. Dear Kimberly,

My name is Stephanie and I am a 6 year (on June 9) survivor of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma too. Although I am not married and don't plan to get pregnant any time soon, I have thought an awful lot about what is going to happen when I do want to get pregnant. When I was diagnosed, I was told that I would have little to no chance of having kids after chemo and radiation. That was a devestating blow, especially being 15. That issue has always bothered me in the back of my mind. My mom is a labor and delivery nurse so I hear about babies and pregnancy all the time. For a while it was almost a slap in the face hearing so much about it becaue I thought I would never have kids. Although I have been told by many doctors that I most likely shouldn't have any problems, it still scares me. I am not worried about passing the cancer on, so to speak. My real concerns and issues are with getting and staying pregnant

Hello Kimberly. I am new to this website and am so excited. Your note is especially interesting to me. I was diag. with Non-Hodgkins at age 20 and that was 16 yrs. ago. I was told that I would probably be infertile. My husband and I were thrilled when I got pregnant in 1988. Our daughter is now 12 and healthy, beautiful and brilliant! We wondered whether that pregnancy was a fluke, as I had a miscarriage about a year later, but then was able to carry 2 more pregnancies to term, thus my 2 sons, who are as healthy, handsome and brilliant as our daughter! Hi, I had a Wilm's tumor at age 13, in 1979 at age 23 I had my daughter! I had a few problems with the pregnancy but she is now 12 years old, happy, healthy with an above average intellegence!! She is one of my many gifts from God!! Best wishes! Survivor

Just wanted to update you on my last post. We had our beautiful daughter in December! She is wonderful and we feel very blessed. She is healthy and I had no cancer related complications with my pregnancy. Thank you!

Hello there. It has been some time since you posted this message, but do hope that you check in now and then.

I was quite surprised to learn that you had a Wilm's tumor at age 13. I thought that Wilm's tumors were found only in young children. Is your case a rarity?

I had a Wilm's tumor at 2 years old, radiation, chemo and nephrectomy. I have not had any long-term problems with exception of scoliosis (result from stunted growth on the side of the cancerous kidney). I am fortunate, but have taken many things for granted as a result of not remembering much of my cancer or the treatments. Just trying to learn more about the Wilm's tumor, so any info you have about your experience would be appreciated.

Well, it's been over a year since your post, but I see we have something in common. I also had Wilm's Tumor diagnosed when I was 2 years old. This was 1972. A year later, I had mets to my l. lung. I've actually had quite a few health complications, but then also had more treatments due to the recurrence.

I'm glad to hear that you don't have too many health problems. I have learned so much in the last year about my health, though, and things we need to watch out for.

It's been life-saving for me and has helped me so much learn about the information that is out there and, for the first time, to connect with other people like myself.

Hello my name is Jennifer and I read your response about Wilm's Tumor and the person who was 13 when they were diagnosed. I can top that one by a few years. I was 17, graduating high school and I had a 20lb. Wilm's Tumor growing off one of my kidneys. I went through radiation and chemo and have been cancer-free for almost 12 years now. You are kind of lucky not to remember. The couple of years of treatment I had to go through were pretty intense because of the size of the tumor. When I was diagnosed, I was told I was too old for this disease so I guess it is a rarity for someone to get it past their early childhood years.

I was diagnosed with Wilms at age 11. It is a rarity, though they think I had it all along and it just laid dormant for a decade. I relapsed at 13. At 21 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The scholastic literature suggests that Wilms patients treated with Adriamycin, cytoxin and lower abdominal radiation are at increased risk for sterility and/or complicated pregnancies or deliveries. The offspring typically are normal and the chance of passing on the Wilms gene is less than 2%. Good news. But I doubt I will ever get pregnant for 2 reasons. A) after my first dose of chemo I'd been vomiting for days and my mother remarked "Now you know what it feels like to be pregnant." and I'm not interested in taxing my remaining kidney any more than is necessary.

Thinking on hacina a baby after lymphoma

is been a Long time since this post I hope you check this still and I really would like to hear about your story.

is been 2 years since I finish treatment and I am thinking on having a baby.
