Mom's fight
She was a nurse (out of the field now) and found a lump 4 years ago. Didn't want to hear the word "Cancer" and did nothing for 2 years. Then seven months before my wedding, she decided to tell all of us her secret. By this time, it had spread to her lungs & bones. She had tumors behind her eyes and was almost blind. Amazingly her tumors went away, no surgery, and recovered quite well. She can see almost perfect again, better than they expected. She still had cells in her lungs and bones, but they were inactive.
So for the past two years, we have been living our lives, and a month ago, her liver profile was high. They've done tests, and now it's in her liver. She started chemo again today. She's very positive. Please give me some advice on what I can do to help her. I feel so helpless. And please pray for her.
Robin

Hi Robin,
Your mom is so lucky to have such a caring daughter. Just being available will mean the world to her. She may feel tired & nauseated from the chemo so offering to run errands and cooking to her new taste will be a challenge for you. If she's going to lose her hair, get her some cute hats. Give her lots of hugs and end your goodbyes with "I love you". You both will be in my prayers, Margaret0 -
Dear Robin, You are a wonderful daughter. I am sure you are aware your mom will go through many emotions, be patient with her in the rough times, listen to her fears and let her know it is OK to be scared, Hug her.
Celebrate the good times with her (even if it seems insignificant) Don't be afraid to "say the wrong thing", let her know how much you love her and want to be there for her. It is great that your mom has a positive outlook. Cancer does make you feel helpless, weather you are a patient or a care giver, so you and your mom show cancer that you are fighters and you are going to FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!! You and your mom will be in my prayers. God Bless you both, Murphy0 -
Dear Robin. I am happy to hear that your mom is such a fighter. This whole cancer thing is a real bugger, but a strong mind and will , can conquer anything. I have a friend here who has breast with mets to the lungs, liver, bones, eye and neck. She was diagnosed five years ago, and she looks wonderful and is doing fantastic. Her onco( who also happens to be my onco) told her that as long as they can keep the tumours from interupting organ function, she can live to be 100. I would never have guessed this woman has cancer. When she told me, i was floored. So you see, there is hope for all of us. My liver profiles were above normal for a whole year, and my onco did not tell me, then finally the tumours started to shrink and my levels went down to normal. So it is not hopeless yet, and never will be, not with you by her side and her strong will.murphy said:Dear Robin, You are a wonderful daughter. God Bless and take care.

Robin,
I will keep your mother in my prayers. It is ironic that your mother kept a "secret" for so long, yet my mom was just the opposite. Her doctor didn't catch it for 3 years! Fortunately for her it was only in her 1 breast and some lymph nodes. She just was tested last month and they all came back with good results. Lets pray your mom will have the same news.

Hi Robin,
My mom has cancer too, and let me tell you, this is the best web site for information, inspiration, courage, and friendship.
My mom had cancer 6 yrs ago in her right breast. She had a modified radical mastectomy, and in Jan.'01 she found out she had it again in her left. She had another modified radical mastectomy. She's been having a few problems with her incision, so she hasn't started any chemo, but is on tamoxafin.
One way I was able to help my mom was by getting her some important information she needed to help her make decisions in her treatment. We live 12 hrs apart so I can't be with her on a daily basis, but I was there for her surgery and travel to see her as often as possible. And,for my mom, asking people to help cook, clean, and do laundry for her is very hard, so I have tried to line up as much help for her as possible, that way she doesn't have to ask!
Our Prayers are with you and your mom Robin,
Take Care,

Robin, I know what you are going through...On March 23, my mother was told that her breast cancer of 10 years ago has recurred in her bones. She is going through radiation and taking a new drug, arimidex. What you can do for your mother is to get her into a support group in your area. Breast cancer is a lonely diagnosis, and it would help for her to be with other women who are experiencing cancer. I believe in the power of prayer, so I will pray for her, Robin. A positive attitude is very important to the immune system, so keeping her positive is great. My mother, too, waited 2 years before she went to the doctor originally. This time, she was in pain in her back for about 10 months before she had a MRI. Stay in touch, Robin...Bonnie0
