Dear Jerry, I read your e-mail and I understand your apprehension about this procedure. It is not a definite thing that your wife will get lymphedema. Only 10% of patients who have this type of surgery do. I would definitely want to know if there were any cancerous cells left, so my opinion would be that if it was me,I would have the surgery. I live with lymphedema everyday and it is not fun but I am coping with it. Discuss all the possibilities with your doctor and read all the literature you can get your hands on. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife through these trying times. Shirley

    Shirley,

Thanks for sharing your opinion and concern. I have passed your comments on to Donna. We have made the decision to have the surgery - all the literature that we have read clearly recommends the ALND surgery for those who have had positive nodes in prior dissections. We will discuss the care that her surgeon must use to avoid nerve damage. The two nodes that Donna had removed have caused her numbness in her upper arm.

    Thanks again and God Bless,
