child care

I work with women undergoing cancer treatment. I have noticed that lack of child care resources are a real problem. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what was helpful? What would have been ideal to lessen the stress of caring for young children and going through chemo?

    Hi! I'm Maggie. I underwent chemo, with 2 children age 2 months and 7 years old. Without the help of my family and my loving husband and my best friend, I don't know if I could have made it. My mother missed alot of work to stay home with me and help take care of the baby and myself. I pray for the women who undergo this treatment and has no family to help them. Maybe their church or a local childcare could help out these womens. maggie

    Hi there, Tiger here, I have a young son who is 3 1/2 and a nine year old son, my youngest is at home with me all the time, We live on an airbase in Canada and so far the only people who have offered help in the way of childcare are my close friends, even the resource center on the base has not called to offer respite care. If needed my husband can come home from work or take a day off to stay home, his bosses are fantastic. I am on homecare,i see my nurse once a month or when i need her, and she says they offer respite care for the little ones, if i need a nap or have to go to the Dr. I think the community in which we live should have sort of a welcome wagon type of thing for people with medical problems. I imagine there would be people out there, retired,etc,who would love to volunteer.

    I couldn't agree with you more. I did find a program called AVON Cares. It is sponsored by an organization called Cancer Care. I qualified for a one time $250 grant from them to help with such expenses. Child Care is a problem for women undergoing chemo. The grant was great,but only goes so far. The town I live in did an article on me for breast cancer awareness and it ended up being a great thing. One man from my community started a fund raiser to help our family pay for things such as child care. I hope this info has helped you in some way.
