in Prostate Cancer #1

I am in my 13th year dealling with incontinence after prostate surgery. The last 2 years has been much worse (6-8 pads per day). I have considered the AMS 800

since the onset of incontence and recently had the procedure 5 days ago and am very concerned with the outcome. first I noticed a weak stream and trouble empting my bladder. then the swelling began big time and much pain. I was so looking forward to relief but so far it hasn't happened.

Has anyone had any similiar problems or is to be expected?

    An AMS "Veteran"

    I just read your post.  I've had two AMS surgeries, the first coming in 2006.  How are things going?

    I see that you have this procedure done  twice.  My husband is scheduled for this surgery on the 12th.  Can you give us some insight on what to expect recovery wise?

    Brief description of AUS surgery.

    First of all, I tried everything possible to avoid this surgery and told my doctor that I didn't  want a foreign object embedded in my body.  He assured me, the AUS was the gold standard.  I found myself becoming depressed and avoiding social situations.  I had to do it.  I'm  going to be brutally honest.  The surgery and recovery are not pleasant, but it's worth it.  Your penis and scrotum will be sore, swollen, and most-likely will turn the color of a plum (purple). A hand-held shower head is beneficial for keeping the groin area clean. Because of the medications, you will be constipated. The first couple of poops are problematic. You can't  strain because you'll  rip your stitches.  But if you don't  strain, you can't  poop. I load up on fruit and use a bit of laxative to soften the load.  After 3 or 4 days, things get better.  For a week or so, it's  difficult to walk normally, but you can shuffle.  Also, somebody may have to help you put on shoes and socks  because its difficult to bend over. You will have no bladder control until the doctor activates the AUS, usually in 6 weeks.  Activation requires the doctor to push a little pop rivet (button) located on the AUS pump in your scrotum.  It will feel like a pinch, but it's  tolerable.  That's  a brief summary.  If you email me at drtsawyer@aol.com, I would be happy to give you my number  and we can talk about it.  Believe me, the AUS has changed my life.

    Joseph: I've  read your posts and I'm  sure they've  been very beneficial  to anybody considering an AUS. I'm  happy that Trew helped you through this, because I was able to help him during those difficult soul-searching days and weeks prior to surgery and during his recovery period.  By the way, my second AUS works even better than the first!

    To avoid constipation problems start taking your stool softners several days before surgery.

    3rd AUS

      After a radical in 2005 i went totaly incontinent for 18 months. my 1st AUS failed within 6 weeks. the 2nd was immediatly put in and i was never satisfied, but i went for my post ops, had xray and cystoscope and was told the implant was functioning as well as it could. I have gone 10(ten) years using 3-5 Tena #3 pads per day until it became  tpossibleto access my chart online. I then discovered that both the xray and cystoscopy showed incomplete closure. I had been lied to. NEW doctor discovered the resevoir, supposed to hold 24 cc of fluid only had 23 cc. I had a new AUS put in 39 days ago. in 3 days it will be activated and i am, of course, hopeful.ironic fact...i am an MD.

    Has enyone experience with pain and blod after exercising? We live in the countryside and are used to be out in the nature. I am thankfull for coments.
