    Worried sick about my dad
    Hi,
I am also a prostate cancer survivor who chose radiation Therapy. If your dad had his prostate removed and he still has a PSA then the cancer was not completely killed. I also have a PSA level which is rising after just two years. The next course of treatment is Hormone therapy. Hormone therapy while it don't kill the cancer cells cause them to lie dormant for many Many years. This is a good treatment which most prostate cancer patients will have to undergo sometime in the future. The key to any treatments are to stay in shape eat a healthy diet and have a positive attitude to the future. If your dad is 65 he will probably die from something else rather than Prostate Cancer. I am 63. Please ask any questions that you may need an answer for because i have done extensive research into this cancer for obvious reasons.

    Hi Cecfry...
Thank you so much for commenting Dad was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer 10 years ago and had the operation so it is 10 years later his Psa started to increase which shows there were some cells remaining or had just started but thank you so much for commenting this site has seriously been unbelievable in helping me the son get through it all.

Great news and a wonderful Christmas present.

    Thanks so much Kongo
He has to go to Dublin tomorrow to see the specialist but he got his bloods taken from his own Doctor so he could have a guideline as to what the Psa level was as that is the reason going to Dublin tomorrow but now that it is done I thinks they will be very happy to.

Thanks for sharing with us the news.
Your dad has entered in the Zeros at his 6-months mile stone post RT, and on his way to a nadir. Mine was at the 13th month. Surely no two cases are equal but the trend of his PSAs all indicate that the values will get lower.
    Congratulations.

This is also almost one year since your introduction in this forum and I am glad to know you have included us in your group of friends.
I wonder if your father has experienced or have any symptom or side effect.

I hope your family is at peace now and wish a continuous good progress.

    The best.

That is brilliant to here you are happy to :) Is Nadir meaning that it will drop even lower then 0.9 that is brilliant if that is the case, I have asked Dad and he has said no Symptoms really his Doctor said his sugar level is up so he is working on getting that down now but the Doctor was not too worried with that but is just over the moon :)

As commented above, I believe that the PSA will get lower. In some cases the PSA bowances before dropping to nadir. Only time will tell which level will the PSA reach in your father's case.
I would recommend him to follow a convenient and proper diet and get fit to counter any effect. Just get a relook at the previous posts in this thread.
    The best to you all.

Update on Dad Nov 1st 2012
    Hey Ya,

I said I would give an update on my Dad all is going good he is doing really well the Psa has now dropped to 0.6 that was the last update that he had. Today though Nov 1st 2012 a letter came in the door asking him to attend the hospital for a Colonoscopy he rang first as the letter just asked him to attend for a check up but he was unsure so rang and they said it was for a Colonoscopy. Just wondering is this standard and have you had to get this done to, I presume it is to check in case the Radiation has affected around the tissue or anything like that and to check any Polps or anything but I presume it is going to be ok all fingers crossed.

    Thanks once again VG,

    Gary.

Thanks for sharing on the improvements of your dad's 18 months mile stone.
You are right with the treatment follow up tests. I had a cystoscopy done after surgery and a colonoscopy done 12 months after RT. The colon and urethra are the most affected areas and I needed treatment for urethra stricture two years after RT. This year I had another colonoscopy due to positive FOBT. The results indicated Diverticulosis, which may have been an effect from RT.

The test is simple and may be painful if not done with local anaesthesia. It will be done by a gastroenterologist not the team who performed the RT on your dad so that it is recommended that he informs the gastro about his radiotherapy before the procedure.

    Keep the faith.

    Dad still doing brilliant...

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say how well my Dad is doing and I just wanted to make sure everyone who supported me via this Forum is doing good also please do let me know. I just had it in my head to update the post and see how everyone is doing and again when it was tough for me I cannot thank you all enough via this forum as it really calmed me down to the extent that I knew he was going to be ok and with all your support and help it would not of been possible for me to stay calm.

Hopefully you all will see this as not to sure if I done it right - Vasco & Lewvino.

    Glad that

Glad that your dad is doing well. That is good news. I had a local recurrance of my cancer and am finishing up 38 sessions of IMRT Radiation this week. Hope to knock the little beast out for good.

I'm now four years post surgery.

    I will say a prayer...

Awww I will say a prayer for you and one thing to do at night time before you go asleep is visualize all the cancer going away from your body and leaving you through your feet and just dissappearing - I will also keep you in my prayers but you are a very caring and strong man and you really will get rid of it for good this time.

    Best wishes,

    Gary.
