I know that most of us "oldies" on this site know this, but, probably a lot of the newbies don't as of yet. Even though this site, we would like to think, is for bc survivors, caregivers etc., there are some "bad" people out there that try to take advantage of you in many ways. There are also some "bad" people that for whatever reason like to spam the discussion threads or post threads or sites that might be harmful to your computer if you click on them. The one rule of thumb that we try to go by is that if it is a "new" user on the site, it might not be wise to click on any internet thread that they might post. And, I don't mean to target the newbies on here, but, if you think about it, ofcourse that would be where the harmful sites would come from. We have also had people posing as bc survivors on here that eventually asked for money and had so many of the caring, wonderful bc survivors willing to do anything for them. There are also people that advertise that they will pay you money or give you gift cards just for some info from you. This opens you up to identity theft. Just be smart! I know it is horrible to think that people do these things, but, they do. And, at this time of year especially, people are probably more gullible and might do something that they might not do otherwise. This site is so great for all of us that are here for what it stands for. But, there are people out there that are just on here to take advantage of you and to mess up your computer or steal your personal information. Ok, I hope I didn't scare anyone too bad. LOL

p.s. Please don't anyone, especially the "newbies", take offense at this. But, there are so many new ones that have just joined, that I want to be sure that you are aware of this and us "oldies" might need a new reminder also. It makes me sick to think that people do this, but, they do. We have had it on here before and still are. Enjoy the site for what it is made for, sharing and supporting each other along this journey. Because this really is a GREAT site!

    Thank you for posting this. I have seen several spammers come and go on here. Thankfully, Greta can remove them if she is notified about them. I always send an email to CSN when I see one. This is a really great site, but, there are bad people out there. Thanks again Lex.

    I have to say that links can lead to a virus. My husband fixes computers and just fixed one that got a virus from a link in facebook. This is not a response against Veronica just saying you should be careful with any website and have updated virus protection.

    This is a great reminder, Lex. Thanks. I noticed in a reply from someone the other day, their home phone number. I thought at the time, not such a good idea. I should have said something, but didn't. So, I am now.

    I would like to add my thanks for this post. It has not even entered my mind that someone might pose as a bc just to spam or scam us. I'm savvy enough tho not to alway go for a website or link, thanks to my husband. But as cautious as we are, there is always a chance we will be scammed. Is there any other way to know if someone is real or not, other than posting links or sites? Thank you again for posting.

    Very good advice Lex!
    I was here when that one person was telling so much stuff and some believed her. It didn't happen right away, but, it got to where money was being asked for and some were going to send it to her until others on the site found out she was a fake. It was so sad and such a cruel thing to do. And, I have seen the spammers and the hackers on here. There is a place in H*LL for them. I was always told to never give out any personal info over the net and I don't. Got a cop in the family. LOL I just wish these people would just go find something useful to do with their time. But, they aren't that kind of people!

    Thanks Lex and Greta! So many just assume that everything someone might post on here is ok to click on, and, it isn't, as has been proven before. Hackers and spammers are the worse!

    Thanks for the warning. I would like to let people know that I have recomended a site called caring4cancer.com that is a lagitimate site I got from my onc. It has been very helpful for me. The more we educate ourselves the better we will do and that is just what this site is designed to help with.
    Also, keep in mind one has to have a e-mail to sign up to use this site!!!!!!!!!!!! and everything can be reported.

    This was so good that you reminded some of us and brought this to the attention of the newbies Lex. Everyone on this site has not been here for the right reasons. We have seen that. S3, just because someone has to have an email to sign up here, doesn't mean they are here for the right reasons. Anyone can start a new email in a couple of minutes, if it takes that long. Just be careful and smart when clicking on or going to sites that someone might recommend that hasn't been on the site long.

    Thanks Greta for removing them so quickly! You are great!

    Oh Rats~ I've been
    Oh Rats~ I've been discovered! Just because I asked everyone to send me a dollar, and I would send in return a official, US government approved engraved image of Abraham Lincoln, or, for $2.00, a silver engraving of Franklin Roosevelt, doesn't mean I'm a lair, scammer, or a cheat. Oh wait~ yes it does! LOL

    We have sadly been duped and taken in by a few less than honest people over the years. As we are indeed Kindred Spirits, we reach out with our hearts and welcome all with love and empathy. Whereas 99%+ of the posters in here are as they appear, it is the less than 1% who can truly devastate the goodwill on these boards. Thankfully, on the other hand, we have the ability to weather the occasional storm and re-group and stay connected with our TRUE warrior-survivors.

    This isn't "just" CSN, much as we would like it to be! It is "The Internet" with all of the dangers inherent. It is just a word to the wise~ not intended to dampen the spirit of this amazing family here on the boards. We don't need to be suspicious of anyone, just aware. So that on those few times we are taken in, we can shake it off, and move on to what is most important~ supporting each other as we do battle with the beast.

    I remember
    a few bad apples on here very well. But, they are gone now. WHEW! Or, I hope they are. Everyone just has to realize that there are some less than honest people in this world and that this is the internet. Scams, spamming, sending virus's, stealing your information, goes on all of the time on the internet and can even on here. Luckily, we haven't seen it a lot. Just be cautious on here as you would be on any other site. You can send PM's to people on here if you wish to share personal info. This site is so good for so many of us and I am very thankful that it is here! I say thanks to you too Greta for removing them yesterday.

It's so sad that we have to deal with those "other" people messing with our lives. For the rest of you though, I feel the warmth and caring soles that are here helping one another.     I used my own judgement and didn't tell my "Police Sargent Detective" hubby (even worse! He looks for clues! LOL). But he did say that the friends I have been talking to all year, I could probably use my own judgement and be fine.
    But I did spill the beans that I gave my address to chenhart and so if he came home from work and found me murdered, kidnapped, or scammed, his first clue should be to look for a 50ft women leaving town.....what do you think he meant when he said I would look good in a new white coat?

    Yes, thank you for this post Lex. I had thought about this, but, then thought nah, it wouldn't happen on here. Now I know to be more careful. I tend to forget that even this site is the internet where you have to be careful. Thanks!
