Moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma

Options

Dear All,

My father has been having difficulty swallowing water and food from past few weeks. Recently, after we checked with docctor, his endoscopy and biopsy was done.

His Chest X-ray, UGI Endoscopy and Laryngoscopy were fine. UGI Endoscopy reports showed that food was stuck in the food pipe.

The biopy report however scares me. It says Final Diagnosis:-Esophageal, biopsy: -Moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, esophageal biopsy

I am really scared about the result on this report as I googled and found that it is form of cancer. I am currently in US due to work and my father is in India, I am planning to be with him soonest. Please help me with next course of action based on your experience.

Thank you very much.

Next steps would be additional testing for staging

I am so sorry you your father has been diagnosed with cancer.

Next steps would typically be additional testing for staging. It may include a PET or CT scan to rule out metastasis to other areas of his body and an ultrasonic endoscopy to determine the depth that the squamous cell tumor his penetrated into the esophageal wall. Depending on the location of the tumor his treatment may include radiation therapy to kill the tumor and chemotherapy to eliminate other cancer cells in his system.

Squamous cell carcinoma normally occurs in the upper portion of the esophagus and depending on the proximity to other critical structures like the vocal cords and larynx radiation may or may not be done.

Staging will define a treatment plan that typically includes radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery to remove the cancer.

Wishing you and your father best of luck as his treatment eradicates this cancer.

    Best Regards,

    Paul
