Hello all,

My mother was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last week. I have researching and learning alot about it since past few days. From the PET-scan it appears that it is stage III Squamous cell carcinoma. She had tumor in the mid esophagus and 2 lymph nodes were affected. The doctor suggested to start with chemo and radiation. I'm very interested in finding out what others are finding successful and learn about their stories.

Hi Harry,

So sorry to hear about your mother. For stage 3 typical treatment is chemotherapy and sometimes radiation therapy depending on the location of the tumor. Since squamous cell cancer tends to occur higher in the esophagus sometimes if the tumor site is close to the larynx the will not do radiation. There are various chemotherapy protocols that are used depending on the oncologist and the patient health profile.

You might try posting your question on https://www.smartpatients.com/ under the esophageal cancer heading. There are a number of squamous cell esophageal cancer survivors there that can provide more specifics about treatment approaches.

For stage 3 patients, chemotherapy and radiation is typically followed by esophagectomy surgery to insure a long-term remission.

Regards,

Paul
