Hi Ladies, I have just little peach fuzz left in my head. My scalp is very dry. My oncologist recommended using using Dove shampoo and conditioner for washing. Wondering if that's what I should be using and if I should be massaging with lotion. I'm a also told I should be massaging my scalp in general to keep my scalp pores open. Is this true? |

Dove products
When I lost my hair I was just using a mild soap on my scalp, but I have used Dove products and found them to be mild. As for the massage - a scalp massage sounds like a great idea for any reason!

Fridayschild, I agree ...
Fridayschild, I agree ... head massage anytime feels good. My husband thought they suggested it to keep my scalp pores open. Do u know this to be true?
I was using Baby Shampoo and when I told my oncologist my scalp was dry she suggested Dove. Maybe I'll ask her about lotion at my next appointment or call the nurse. Did u ever use lotion on your scalp to help with dryness?

No personal knowledge
Sorry, I don't know for sure. I didn't use any lotion on my head, and don't really remember having any particular dryness. I would think you'd need to be cautious about the lotion, though, so the residue from it didn't clog the pores you were trying to keep open? Maybe someone with more direct experience will stop by with information.

Special shampoo
There is a special shampoo they sold me at my wig store for people going through chemo I’m afraid it’s a whole cottage industry.

Try VaniCream shampoo
Try VaniCream shampoo and conditioner. You can get it at Walmart, Walgeens, CVS or Target, Sam’s Club or Costco. Ask the pharmacist at the store. It was formulated by pharmacists at the Mayo Clinic years ago. It is very gentle on skin and hair. Your scalp is tender and your hair follicles are under assault by heavy metals in chemo. Hope you find relief soon! Definately don’t use anything with a fragrance in it.

Thanks Fridayschild,
Thanks Fridayschild, CheeseQueen and Lori, I'll try to get a different shampoo that u suggested and I wont use lotion. Didnt even think about clogging the pores but good point. And yes I bet it would be sensitive to fragrant lotion especially.
I appreciate all of your feedback.

Thanks Quilter 1 , I was using baby shampoo. Wondering if I should go back to that or atleast alternate. Did the Aveeno close the pores on your scalp?

The aveeno is just a dry skin
The aveeno is just a dry skin cream and simply soothed and moisturized my scalp.

I can't remember!
Isn't that wild? It's been less than two years and I really can't remember what I did. Probably just a dab of whatever shampoo I had in the shower on the fuzz. Never did lotion for sure, and don't remember dryness. Maybe you could try just a hint of conditioner - whatever you used before. Don't worry! Before you know it, it's going to be back!
