Hi everyone,

I have satge 4 colon cancer and recently had colon tumor removal surgery due to obstruction in colon And still trying to recovery. I wonder has anyone had liver transplantation with primary colon cancer. My oncologist at MD Anderson told me liver transplantation will not work form because my primary tumor is in colon. I appreciate if you write your feedback and experience for same issue.

thanks

Kadir

No normally if you get cancer

that spreads to the liver from someplace else a transplant is not an option. It’s only an option in liver cancer or occasionally bile duct cancer. When it comes from another source your options are more limited but not bad. You should talk to you oncologist about chemo, if you are a candidate for liver resection, and other methods of killing the metaststic tumors.

Have you talked to a surgeon

Have you talked to a surgeon that specializes in liver surgery at MDA about your case?

No, I have not talked to liver surgeon at MDA  yet, but my oncologist was sure when saying transplantation will not work for metastatic tumor.

    Liver resection

is totally different than a transplant. A resection is when they cut the parts of your liver with tumors in it away.  You can’t have them spread over the whole liver it has to be in one area and some areas are harder to get. My husband has had two liver resection and one ablation of the tumor.

    Liver transplant

Not an option if the liver has tumors from other cancers.  If you got a transplant, the cancer would attack the liver in no time.  I asked my Onc this when I was diagnosed.

    Liver Surgeon

From what I've learned, liver resection is the optimal treatment for mets in that organ.  Whether or not that option is available to you should be the surgeon's decision - not the oncologist.  I had 3 different oncologists at 2 cancer centers tell me to get my afairs in order when I was diagnosed stage iV last year.  They said surgery was not an option and I would have 2 years left at best.  I met with a surgeon at MSK and at the first appointment was told he would be doing a liver resection and that all of my tumors would be removed.

    Transplant

They will not do transplant surgery in the US if it is not primary liver cancer. They are doing it in OSLO and with pretty good results. I reached out to a surgeon there and you must be a resident and move there to have it done.

How did you find out about Oslo?

It would be tempting to move there for that procedure, but difficult for most people.

    Cleveland Clinic Transplant Protocol

Here is a TRANSPLANT program at Cleveland Clinic.  They are developing after following the Oslo, Norway program.  I am scheduled for resection and HAI pump insertion there on the 25th.

    Encouraging

Encouraging to see that they are researching this again! We already know that the cancer does come back but I don't see why with close monitoring a positive outcome couldn't be achieved.

Joan google searching led me to it. Svien Dueland is whom I reached out to.
