Mouth sores side effects of chemo

New here, so not sure how to post stuff YET. I'm a 3 year cancer patient, diagnosed in February 2015 with anal cancer. Treatment was radiation and chemo therapy and it was successful with this cancer - however, on my 3 year anniversary I was diagnosed again. My cancer had metastasized to my back - one tumor, and several nodules in my right lung. Treatment has been 1 treatment of cisplatin and 6 days to a chemo pump of 5FU.

Current CT shows tumor gone, and nodules shrinking.

What I wanted to share was my experience with bad mouth sores which develop soon after the pump is removed on the 6th day. My mouth felt like I ate burning hot pizza with sores on the roof of my mouth, gums, tongue and lips. It made talking and eating difficult. These lasted for about a week. One of the things prescribed to me was magic mouthwash...works but temporary. Through some google researching I found an article on oil pulling in which you take a teaspoon of solid coconut oil, put a few drops of clove oil on it, and put it in your mouth to dissolve and swish it around for 15/20 minutes a few times a day (make sure you spit it out in a bucket and not sink). This has been a godsend. After my 4th treatment I went this route - and mouth sores were SUBSTANTIALLY less. And the coconut oil is soothing. Gargling with warm salt water helps the throat...but I just need to find something good for my lips.

    For lips

Hi I  went through 2 sessions of the cisplatin and six days of chemo pump FU5 last October and November.  First time I had bad thrush in my mouth.  I used an over the counter product called "Biotene" it's a mouth moisturizer, worked on my lips.  Also used magic mouthwash, but that was too harsh by that point in time.  Ended up in ACU for 7 days being IV fed, and getting transfusions for neutropenic fever.

    Wishing you the best.

Thrush In Two Spots...Mouth and Ying Yang...

I developed mouth sores too after Chemo the first round. The second round no mouth sores but thrush on my Ying Yang which am still suffering from am using Canestine Cream twice a day 5 weeks now. The Mouthwash they gave me made me very sick with severe painful Stomach gas pains went under my ribs mimicking a HEART ATTACK...got off that crap liquid meds. Eventually mouth sores went away.

    Mouth Sores

I had horrible mouth sores during my tretment.  I tried a lot of things to no avail.  I wish I would have known to try the cocnut oil.  Good luck.
