Volunteer Help

Options

I am now in remission from Stage 2, type B Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I live in Vero Beach, Florida and was treated at the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center. I would absolutely love to give back and have been looking for volunteer opportunities but it seems that all of the positions are during regular working hours. I still work and cannot give any time during the day. I explained to the volunteer director that I had cancer 24/7 and so does everyone else who has cancer. He wants me to find out from others what kind of help/services they would find helpful outside of regualr working hours. I persoanlly would have liked help with taking care of my house, going for a ride to just get out of the house, having someone to talk to or just watch a movie with. Please help me help others. What would you all like to see offered?

Sincerey,

    American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society might have some thing that would work for your schedule. Here is their volunteer website:

As far as what has helped me through the difficult times, just talking to someone that had been through what I was going through was very helpful. I also got a lot of joy from doing art therapy. I have continued to art on my own but it would be nice to have someone to do it with.

Hello.  I bet a local Hospice

Hello.  I bet a local Hospice would love to have a volunteer available after 5 p.m., or on week-ends.  My brother was just diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.  He can't have surgery or treatment, so he's just going to enjoy the time he has left.  But I know that toward the end we will be contacting his local Hospice to see what they offer.  I think that they send people to just sit with patients so that the caregivers can run errands without worrying.  I've also been thinking about volunteering with them in the future...
