Diet

Options

As many of you know, there really isn't a lot out there on prefered diets for Kidney Cancer.  I was wondering what do some of you long term survivors recommend?  I'm planning on going on more of a plant based diet with little to no animal products.  Any other suggestions?

I have had 2 suggestions now

I have had 2 suggestions now to avoid high protein and high potassium foods. Also was recommended to stay away from all milk and soy products and high salt intake. Uughhh doesn't sound fun lol. I also had 2 doctors say....Live your life. Just don't start smoking.

I was told no processed food.

I was told no processed food. Eat green leafy vegetables. That really makes it hard. I’m trying to figure it out what is best also.

I met with a nephrologist and

I met with a nephrologist and dietician, and was not given a specific diet. I was told to avoid large amounts of sodium (I no longer cook with added salt), avoid tea and sugary beverages. Basically, eat from the variety of food groups and avoid fatty, sugary, salty, and processed foods. I initially thought I needed to stay away from large amounts of protein, and other things that I was confused about after researching things online myslef. I am in stage 2 CKD based on my GFR levels, so my restrictions are not as great as someone in a higher stage of kidney disease.

This is the hardest thing for me

I'm afraid if I had to go to a fully plant-based diet, I'd starve to death! I'm in my early 50s and have never liked fruits, though there are a few vegetables I'm good with. I do try to eat more leafy greens when I can, and I try to be more conscious about processed foods and carby/sugary stuff, though some times I do better than others. However, it's a really challenging thing to stay away from protein. I decided I can either stress myself about what I'm not doing, or just do the best I can and eat healthy as much as possible. And when I don't, I'm learning not to beat myself up too much. I certainly don't want to have a diet that is killing me. By the same token, I do want to be able to enjoy eating. I have a feeling this will be an ongoing battle for me as long as I'm still fighting this thing. I am learning to celebrate the small victories and baby steps along the way, and not punish myself when I deviate.

    Diet

I am also going with a plant based diet, with little meat.  I have found that juicing works great for me.  I have never been much of a vegetable eater, but juicing fruits and vegetables together tastes really good.  I have actually been juicing for a year and it makes me feel great.  Since my diagnosis and surgery, I have quit all sugars, processed foods, and no dairy.  I do like my beef and chicken, but I'm keeping it to a minimum.

You can get great ideas and recipes for different juices from Joe Cross and also Chris Beat Cancer.

I read that Chris beat cancer

I read that Chris beat cancer drank a lot of carrot juice and fruits and veggies should be organic. I've been trying I don't eat sweets and no alcohol. Juicing does make me feel better and it's easier to get your fruits and veggies when blended.

My wife and I believe that

My wife and I believe that diet can play a positive role in our life with cancer.  Google it and you'll see plenty of info on the web about it.  Some books are out there as well.  Some of the things that we do which come to mind:  Vegtables (yellow, orange and red veggies especially), salmon, light on the beef, fruits, etc.  There's more.  We try to minimize junk and processed foods.

    pH level

Too much protein in particular is not recommended for a healthy kidney diet with or without cancer and this can be important for those of us with only one kidney to care for. You might be interested in one of the theories behind a plant-based non-processed food diet based around the need to avoid an acidic pH level and promote an alkaline pH (>7.0pH). You can search for terms like 'pH and cancer' if you are interested.

    Thank you!

I appreciate everyone giving their comments.  I have researched a lot on the internet and looked at some books.  Some of the crazy diets can be scary.  After hearing from you all I am looking more into juicing and making sure the food I eat is organic.  I will check into the pH level stuff.  Thanks again!
