Blood with an Illeostomy

in Colorectal Cancer #1

I saw my surgeon today and he told me that rectal bleeding when we have an illeosotomy is not unusual. It's from the colon being irritated because of not being used and is nothing to worry about and is normal. He'd told me that in the past but I've never had it like I have a couple of times since I last saw him. Enough fresh blood to require a pad to prevent staining my clothes. And twice it's gone on for almost a month. It's scary to see so much blood in the toilet. But he gave me a name for it which I've now forgotten, of course, and said it's completely normal. It's probably worse because of the blood thinners I'm on but its good to know that it's not a concern. I just wanted to post this in case someone looks it up and can have some reassurance.

    I had some bleeding..

    I have a colostomy.

    I had just a little blood along with my Rectal discharge. When I told my Onc, he sent me to my Colorectal surgeon to have him take a look.

    He took a sample for biopsy and it came back positive. I am now taking Xeloda and Avasti. The bleeding has stopped.

    Maybe someone else can share their experiences.

    My scope is clear but he can see that it's really irritated. That's unfortunate Tunadog, I hope you're going to be okay. And now I;m wondering if I'm giving wrong information. I'd hate for someone not to be concerned when they should be. But I also don;t want someone to worry when they don't need to. So, yeah, I hope someone else will chime in!

    Maybe there's a difference between an illeostomy and a colostomy as far as discharge is concerned? I don't know much about colostomies and I thought the rectum wasn't used at all any more. That there was no discharge because it was basically sewn up.

    It isn't..

    It isn't, My rectum isn't used anymore. I get a Rectal Discharge which is the fluid which is used help lubricate your stool. It is produced when material moves to the rectum, or in my case into the colostomy bag. 

    My Colorectal Surgeon (also an Oncologist) indicated that cancer tumors bleed. Before my diagnosis my Gastroenterologist pressed on my tumor and produced blood. After that two doctors tried to get a positive biopsy, threes a charm.

    Everyone knew I had cancer but couldn't prove it. They also knew that my third doctor was the best In the area. If it wasn't for him I would probably be dead now. 

    I urge anyone with CRC and bleeding from their rectum to be concerned.

    Hmm, here I was thinking I was helping but I'm endangering people? How do I take this post down? That's the last thing I want to do!

    Yes, I have the same thing, the mucous that would help things pass and it often has blood in it. But then I also had blood for years because of IBS so when I finally did have cancer it wasn't any more than usual and I wasn't concerned. Now I get quite a bit of blood but he said it's normal and not to worry so I thought I'd mention this so anyone else that got it wouldn't worry, either.

    Leave it up..

    There are differences between colostompies and illiostomies.

    Perhaps there is someone on this forum with more information.

    Iliostomy

    I had an iliostomy for about 2 months.  The output into the bag is totally liquid,  No activity at all at anus.  At least that was my expeirience!

    Ileostomy and bleeding

    I had a ileostomy for 2 months too and I had rectal bleeding too I'm also on a strong blood thinne and was bleeding along with the mucus I was told too that it's normal and to not worry about it. I had IBS diag too but after I was diagnosed with cancer and had the ileostomy reversal.

    I'm not sure if you are talking about blood around the stoma or from rectum, but I'd bleed from both areas.  My rectum (even though having and ileostomy) would drip blood into the toilet drip by drip and fill the bowl and I'd be scared to death.  It's a scary thing.  The radiation did a big number on my insides as well and would shed skin and bleed.  As far as my ileostomy it used to bleed because of irritation and nicks.  Colorectal cancer is terrible as we have so much to contend with.  Thanks for posting this as most would definitely be scared so it's good to put the word out.
