healing of a broken bone

I broke my shoulder skiing on new years eve, on my left side the same side of the breast cancer.  I wasn't doing anything extreme, I just toppled over. It was a very minimal fracture, ( I think it was more of a crack). When I saw the orthopedic surgeon in the beginning of January he said that I would be in a shoulder imobilizer for 5 weeks. When I went to a followup this Wednesday he said I need to stay in it for another month. He was very vague when I asked him if there was any healing. I'm wondering if it could be something else. Has anyone broken a bone after treatment? Did it take longer than average to heal? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Love Surf

Ask doc if you can take extra calcium and Vit. D

Cancer treatments tear up our bones.  My doc put me on extra calcium and Vit. D to help.  As your doc about this.

    Thats terrible Surf

Im so sorry to hear about your fall. And I sure wish doctors wouldn't do that "vague" routine! Mostly they are probably just too bored to explain, but then it makes us worry needlessly. My advice to you is to be patient and let it heal properly....

Having chemotherapy as we both did ... our bones take so much LONGER to heal - I have had an ankle issue for 9 months - cast to a soft-cast to a walking shoe.

my Orthopedist has seen this so often in women who have incurred chemotherapy for breast cancer.

I share your frustration- it does get better, I promise.

I blame it on getting older.

Since chemo, I have succeeded in breaking bones 3 times.  All were silly/''tupid things.  But healed quickly.

First time, it was 2 bones in my foot.  It was Hubby's fault.  He had gotten a new smart phone and was playing around finding'stuff' to put on it and found an app to allow your phone to be used as a flashlight.  Insisted he had to put it on my phone.  Then he insisted I had to go outside and try it out.  OK - did we had recently had a TS so there was a lot of mud and puddles.  So in walking between front of house and my truck, I slipped in the mud and one leg/foot went partly under the truck (didn't hit the ground though) and broke 2 bones in foot.  Healed fine and quite quickly.

Next time was my wrist and I did a'good job' on it.  It was during a really bad snowy time but snow had nothing to do with it.  I came out of the bathroom and was walking down the hall and slipped on one of dog's bones and landed on my 'posterior'. Immediately nothing hurt but quickly wrist did.  Went to UC that night and had to go back the next day to Orthopedics for a further eval.  On the way home from that appt, a totally 'TUPID person went flying past me in a smallish SUV with kids in it and lost control of it.  I had 2 options - hit her in her much smaller vehicle with my 3/4t 4x4 Dodge or put it in the median.  (Yes, time does at least seem to 'slow down'.)    So into the median I went on a very rough/jarring ride.  ( Of course when 'Tupid got straightened out off she went- never checking on me.)  Ortho hadn't decided that day rather or nott they thought surgery would be needed so I had to go back in a few days to see how 'things' were going - no longer after my journey in the median surgery was a necessity.  Healed fine with no lingering issues except the screws and plates set off detectors in courthouses, etc.

The last was a yr ago this month and again a bit odd also.  It succeeded in doing a small fracture under my arm and a small Rotator Cuff tear.  It's hard to explain so that it makes sense.  Very simplistically, I was getting out of a tow truck that was a different one than I'm used to riding in (Hubby is a tow driver) and the 2nd step on this one is tucked under where the one on the truck he usually drives.  So I was on the top step, hanging onto the hand hold.  Went to step down to the 2nd step where it should have been but wasn't there.  I dropped to my knee/leg as ground was way too far below.  Held onto the handhold for dear life which I'm sure saved me from a lot worse injuries.  At first I thought it was my knee that had taken the brunt but turned out to be shoulder.   Hard headed me did not go ahead and go when I should have gone.  Months later was still having a lot of shoulder issues and finally did see Dr which is wben I found out that there had been a fracture under arm (healed by then).  Found out about the small Rotator Cuff tear which just happens to be my LE arm.  TX optionns for dealing with it were surgery or because it is small PT and steriod injection - I went with the later and doing good so far.  I see my Ortho PA next month again.  Actually the worst of the pain associated with the tear was/is not at the site of it but lower down arm.  I've been told that this has to do with the nerve damage from UMX and the LE.

I just blame 'it' on body getting older.  The TXs I had for IBC may play into getting older and other 'things' transpiring but I'd rather be here to deal with 'whatever' thanks to TX than to not 'be here'.
