New Allergies Coming Up?

It's hard not to attribute anything new that hapens that makes no sense to the cancer and chemo and radiation and all that happy crappy. I have a new allergy that I'm still trying to figure out what the cause of it is and I'm just wondering if this could be something that can happen after all the poisons we get pumped through us? It's been over a year since my last chemo, almost two years. I just think its really odd.

I'm getting a skin reaction after having a bath. I prefer to bathe because of the ostomy bag, I can somewhat keep it dry and avoid loosening the adhesive. Or I can have a nice, deep, hot bath before I change it and the bag comes off easier. Suddenly I'm getting a rash on my lower half. At first I thought it was the bath bubbles that I've used for years, then the soap, now maybe my detergent, still not sure.

Anyone else?

You're just a walkin' bug trap...

    For what it's worth......

After I was misdiagnosed with pneumonia and prescribed "Z-Pac" (Zithromax), an antibiotic that works like "agent orange" in the human body, I had one allergy after another. The most recent was an allergy to the contrast solution they use for CT scans. Nice! Put me in the ER for the day.... That Z-Pac was given to me almost two years ago! They are now discovering that it doesn't stop working for longer than they thought. Maybe years and years.... It kills bacteria, enzymes, and more that they didn't realize it would kill. The FDA just announced that Cipro, Levaquin, and other antibiotics in that family should be restricted to only cases of the Plague and anthrax.... Imagine that?

While we lay there in the hospital after signing all those papers giving the "team" the right to administer anything they choose, we can end up with problems that last longer than anyone expected.

Allergies...... are the least of the problems. Once our internal balance is upset, anything can happen. Muscle degradation, cardiovascular, respiratory problems, etc etc... can often be the result of the administration of drugs and antibiotics; not everything is safe, and there's no way to know beforehand.

So if you have an allergy or other odd problem after surgery, or a hospital stay, ask for a list of ALL the meds you were given. Look them up on the web and see how many others have had problems after taking any.

The website: http://www.askapatient.com/  is great. People like you and I, and that guy over there (the one with that twitch), post their experiences of drugs they took. Oh sure, it is the Internet and you can't believe much that's posted out here, but when you see people from around the world posting similar experiences to what you are suffering from, it's a fairly decent indication that what they are reporting has some merit.

And more often than not, the comments are later corroborated by the FDA's reports of complaints.

I miss eating peanuts without my eyes watering while I hang onto the toilet hacking up shells.....

    Yeah..... gotta' love pharmaceuticals.

    My best hopes for youse.

    John

    A quick reply

Just this week, I have noticed my skin is itching. I have ALWAYS bathed, with the occasional shower - I'm English, after all - and I have not changed my soap (I have THE BEST soap) or bubbles.

I have also been off the chemo for three years.

My gut instinct tells me that it is the Rabbit and Sage Brush pollen that is thick in the air at the moment. I am allergic to that in the normal, sneezing, stuffy nose way, and now I believe it is irritating my skin.

I do believe, strongly, that the chemo does mess with our system.

If it is just your lower half, that is interesting. If it were bubbbles, soap, detergent, then it would be your whole body.  Do you have new clothes, pants - underwear? They put awful chemicals in new clothes.

I would certainly think about what John said, about the meds that you have been given lately.

There, a quick answer - HA!

    Allergies suck. After chemo I

Allergies suck. After chemo I started waking up with hives on my neck, face, and shoulder. It took a little sleuthing to finally figure out the foam in my pillows was doing it to me. Fortunately that's all that popped up.......................................Dave

    Thanks for the responses

Thanks for the responses everyone! So maybe I'm not crazy and it isn't just some random allergy popping up out of the blue. Not that it helps anything, it just seems odd to have a new allergy in my fifties. I was allergic to soap as a child and only used Pears or Baby's Own. Then I grew out of it.

Ah, well, not a big deal. If this is something I have to deal with it's minor. Just piqued my curiosity, thats all.
