Cancer Fighting Alternative Treatments?

Since I'm newly diagnosed, a number of people are now telling me of all these wholistic or alternative medicines.  One in particular is Essiac tea, another is guanabana.  Does anyone have any first hand experience with alternative treatments?  I know just because something is natural, or non-prescriptive, it doesn't necessarily mean it's harmless.  Would appreciate any advice with supplements/alternative medicine.  I've already read a couple of books on nutrition and foods that feed/fight cancer.  Dara

    Cancer Fighting Alternative Treatments

    Hi Dara B,

I am trying to find information as well.  It is recommended that I take aromatase inhibitors, and I really really don't want to.  The alternative choices I read about are not well defined, or its hard to find solid info on its effectiveness.  Only the main stream medicine offers data and stats.  Please share if you make headway and I will do the same. Good luck

Fighting and preventing Cancer, Holistic Alternatibves

I too have been newly diagniosed (June.) I was given a book called "Waking the Warrior Goddess" by Dr Christine Horner. Great read so far! She outlines foods and alternative treatments to help fight and prevent Breast Cancer.  Everthing I've read so far is meant to empower women to take more control of a situation that can (admittedly) sometimes leave you feeling helpless. I hope this helps, I wish you peach and healing in your journey.

    book recommendation

    Book recommendation:

The Complete Natural Medicine Guide to Breast Cancer--

A Practical Manual for Understanding, prevention and Care

by Sat Dharam Kaur (Naturopathic Doctor)

This book covers an enormous amount of information, from understanding breast cancer to the many topics we have covered here, and much much more.  Whether you have chosen strictly alternative treatment, or as complementary to standard treatments, this covers, in-depth, many, many options.

I originally got it from library, but bought my own copy from thriftbooks.com for just a few dollars. Really helps increase understanding of just what we are fighting and our options, especially natural ones,  for doing so.

Multiple Targeted Treatments Boost Survival by 2x

Taking just one or two alternative treatments will not do much good.  You need a set of treatments that target the various cancer steps, cellular processes and cancer biomarkers.  It seems very technical and you’d need a good alternative medicine practitioner.  Taking alternative treatments along with chemo from the start can boost 5-year survival by a factor of about two.  Most alternative treatments don’t have severe side effects:

“Side effects from the use of alternative medicine are transient and occur in about 4% of cancer patients, and they consist mainly of headaches and gastrointestinal upsets [7] (however, there are some notable exceptions: for example, laetrile treatment can be as toxic as chemotherapy).”

    Science saved me

I would listen to doctors rather than "a whole lot of people" who mention holistic and alternative therapies. Unfortunately, there is a huge variety of so called "treatments" on sale and people on line are making thousands and thousands of dollars in their spare time off of cancer. Nothing wrong with improving your diet and fitness to improve your odds (I have totally changed my diet myself), but I don't think any certain tea or potion can replace chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal treatments. I have heard too many stories of people who regret not listening to their doctors. And why risk it? Chemo is much easier than the horror stories lead you to believe. Also concerning medicines such as hormone treatment, why not try them out to see? Tamoxifen bothered me for about 6 months, but my body is completely used to it now. I am proud to have gotten through all my conventional treaments. A big thank you to the doctors and scientists who made my cure possible!!!
