Damage to kidneys

Hello, I am wondering if any of you are among the 30% of women whose kidneys are affected by the chemo.  I just learned that I am one.  I am on paclitaxilel and cisplatin, cisplatin is the likely cause and they have reduced this by one fifth.  as a result I am looking at taking fewer and fewer of the "supporting" drugs to not overwork my kidneys and want to talk with my MD about what else can be done.  I'll talk with a dietician too.  Of course the high Protien doesn't help the kidneys either, but that has to be.  Anyone else JD this experience?

    About 6 months ago after one round of Cisplatin, my kidneys started leaking Magnesium. When blood Mg was below 0.5, I was getting cramps, below 0.3 - very painful paralysis of hands and feet, that brought me to the ER several times. I am told by doctors that this condition is irreversible  and I am now on IV Mg supplementation.

    Alexandra, thank you for responding.  How did they change your treatment?  Have you finished your chemo?  Sorry if you have written much of this, I'm new to the ste and glad to have found it, you.

    LongTerm Effect of Brachytherapy

    Hello:

    I have just gone through hydroureternephrosis of my left kidney with some decrease in my left kidney.  I had a blockage near the bladder caused by the HDR brachytherapy.   I had to have a stent placed to protect the kidney from any further damage.   Then every three months I need to have the stent replaced under anesthesia.   I did that for a year and a half until December 7, 2015 when I just underwent surgery to have my ureter reimplanted into a different part of my bladder.   They were going to do that robotically, but my intestines where up in my mesh from a previous surgery so I had to have an incision.  Then my ureter was connected to my veins and intestines which needed to be meticulously cut away.  Finally, they freed the ureter, clipped it as close as they could and reimplanted it in my bladder.   It seems to be working well.

    I had chemo in 2005/2006 and brachythereapy in August of 2006. and my kidney problems started at the beginning of 2014.

    I, too, had kidney issues from Cisplatin.

    My kidneys also leaked magnesium throughout my chemo treatments.   I would also lose potassium, and my kidney function was significantly compromised.   I was provided additional magnesium prior to each chemo infusion, and eventually had standing orders for additional fluids and magnesium 2-3 times per week both throughout my chemo treatment and for several months following my treatment until my magnesium levels stabilized. When my levels were low I would feel quite ill and be very weak.  Fortunately I did not require hospitalization, and my center was very proactive and responsive so we were able to call them and say I was on my way and they would have fluids waiting for me upon my arrival.  I take oral magnesium daily.  My kidney levels (BUN and creatinine) are not normal, but near enough that my doctors are satisfied that I will be okay.  I have been NED for 28 months.  I am very careful with the over-the-counter medications I take, and am diligent about hydration.

    Damage to kidneys

    Has anyone been given amigos tine to protect kidneys from effects of cisplatin?  I appreciate hearing from each of you about your experience.  Thank you.

    Hello again,

    It looks like I will be taken off cisplatin.  Was that your experience with kidney damage?  What was plan "b" for you?  Has anyone been given amifostine?  It is supposed to protect kidneys while getting chemo.
