In this recent short video Dr. Valter Longo (cancer and aging researcher), discusses some of his work regarding short term diets for cancer patients which are in clinical trials now, and what the resarch and population observations suggest is the best macronutrient mix for long term aging and cancer prevention.

It appears the objective of the short term fasting mimicking diet, done for a few days before and during chemo, is to lower glucose, insulin and IGF-1, the effect of which is to strengthen normal cells so that they can withstand chemo better with diminished side effects and to weaken cancer cell growth signals and make them easier to kill with the chemo.

The other take away is that no cancer patient should routinely be eating simple carbs and more than a moderate amount of protein, even between chemo cycles.
