Kidney damage

Options

IN 2009 I had chemo and radiotherapy for laryngeal cancer. Towards the end of treatment bloodwork showed that my kidney creatinine numbers were increasing. a week after treatment my kidneys were only working at roughly 56%. The chemo onc said there is no damage and laughed it off. No treatment for the damage was given and he continued to say the kidneys were fine, he even ordered contrast dye for my cat scans, which should never have happenedIn mid 2010 I saw a Urologist who said I had stage 3 kidney disease caused partially because of the cisplatin. I have now found out that had the doctor treated me for kidney damage there was a 90% chance of it being reversed, now I am stuck with CKD, Chronic kidney disease. Anyone else get kidney damage from cisplatin?

    wow, denis, that is pretty

wow, denis, that is pretty upsetting!!  once again, another example where a doctor just does NOT care!  i think  many of us have seen an example of this during our battle.  i'm so sorry you are faced with this, especially when it did NOT have to be!!  i hope and pray it doesn't affect your life too drastically or keep you from living well.  i will say a prayer for you tonight.

    God bless you,

    Denis,

No experience with chemo and CKD, but my husband is doing chronic dialysis every other day.  His kidney function was at 20 % for over 20 yrs., before they completely failed.  Make sure they send you to a nephrologist a.s.a.p. !  (if your not already)  You can live a pretty decent quality of life if you know what to do, and how to control levels of phospherous, protien and potassium in your diet.  I am so sorry to hear of this added stresser.  Hoping someone else has more info for you regarding the chemo. and CKD.  Hugs sent,  Katie

    Sorry to hear that Denis

My wife has 29% function of her kidneys. Now she never had chemo or cancer but she just dropped to stage 4 at 29%. She can not eat anything that ever lived. She can't process animal proteen. The onlt thing that has kept her going is walking a mile or two every day. Riding a bicycle does not help, just walking. She will not do Dialysis if it gets worse it just will. She has been fighting for 20 years and will just let nature take its course. She has been down to 23 and got it back up to 40 but they say that will not happen any more for her. Try walking and find out what you should not be eating. If her doctors would have listened 20 years ago she would be ok now. They just did not listen when she had the tase of a copper penny in her mouth. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

    Kidney Damage

When my treatment was being planned it was decided not to use cisplatin because of my renal function, so it stands to reason that it is rough on the kidneys. They also use a different, kinder to kidneys contrast medium when doing CTs.  I'm also in level 3 and was told that proper hydration is extremely important to protect the kidneys. My doctor said people generally live for years and years in level 3, so don't panic, but follow your urologist's advice.

    Kidney damage

I had Cisplatin March of 2014 for stage 4 tonsilar Ca. After my second dose of Cisplatin, I landed in the hospital with kidney failure.  I've been seeing the nephrologist since then.  I have stage 4 CKD with a gfr of 27 and a creatinine of 1.8.  This has been my baseline these last 3 years.  I'm still working and short of being tired, I have no side effects.  Last week my doc says I don't need to come back for a year! I'm 58 yo and feel fine, but I know that if anything happens and I get really sick, the kidneys will fail.  We will cross that bridge when we come to it.  In the meantime, I am doing everything I want to do and enjoying most days.
