Brachytherapy clinical trials

Hey guys,

So I was checking out the link provided by ouch ouch ouch and Martha back last year about a clinical trial for high dosage Brachytherapy in New York.

It appears to be open still now.

Is there any reason why British nationals could not enroll on it, if we were willing to pay?

I think you'd have to ask that question of the institution that was doing the trial.

    Hi Martha,
    If it's currently

    Hi Martha,

If it's currently only being implemented as a clinical trial, do you think that rules it out as an option for treatment unless we actually go on the trial? Jusat wondering if an oncologist would even be allowed to implement a form of treatment unless it had been checked first.

It was advertised on a British list of clinical trials as "recruiting", so that's one good thing. Hopefully we can get on it if all else fails.

Because of litigation possibilities, I doubt that any physician would try a treatment that is currently in clinical trials.  It would seem that the only way to get this treatment would be through the trial.  However, as I said, I know of a couple of people who have had brachytherapy for anal cancer.

    Thanks

    Hi Martha,

OK thanks. I had actually forgotten that you mentioned somebody who had had it for a recurrence. It's odd that they were allowed it if it hadn't even been trialled back then. Thanks for the info!

    Hi,

It is my understanding that often the rules in being eligible for some clinical trials are different for recurrance than for initial treatment, so you may have a good chance. (Usually protocal treatment is required first or in combination with)

    Wishing you luck!!

    Thanks guys, Do only know

    Thanks guys,

Do you know what the process would be to get on the clinical trial? I ask because obviously time is of the essence, the operation was scheduled for about 4 weeks. Would that be when we could expect my mum to receive treatment? The trial is in phase 1. Would they want to do their own scans etc? I honestly know nothing about clinical trials. On one hand it sounds quite scary as this is my mum's life we're talking about, on the other, it looks like a promising alternative to a colostomy and perhaps something that will be standard treatment in a few years time? Any advice would be really appreciated. My mum's second opinion is tomorrow morning in London. I'm here on my own looking after the dogs, I feel so powerless to help.

    Hi,

I think that as Martha mentioned your best and quickest way to get answers would be to contact the institution that is conducting the trial you are interested in. There is also a link through the ACS on the left of this screen Clinical Trials Finder that may be another option and provide some more contact information.
