in Head and Neck Cancer #1

My husband completed his 4 weeks neutron radiation treatment today. He is doing surprisingly well given the circumstances. He did have a low point during the end of third week/beginning of 4th week, when he couldn't eat solid foods anymore. However, he has since discovered the convenience of Boost VHC and is able to sort of satisfy his daily calorie needs. He has lost about 9 lbs so far. He is continuing to train for his marathon and ran nearly 100 miles during the month of December!

He has one more treatment next week - Gamma Knife radiosurgery to the skull base. Hopefully he comes out unscathed (relatively speaking of course) through that as well!!

Thanks to this forum, we have found quite a few useful tips.

    4 neutron weeks behind him, 1 gamma knife to go, sounds doable and a marathon to boot.  Sign me up for some Boost VHC.

    Seems to be doing very good and still running that much is great. He must have the right attitude to beat this and that helps so much. Now the question is, how are you doing? I hope you get the rest you need. It is so hard on the caregiver/Loved ones, but as the patient we do know what you go through. My wife fell when I was in the hospital recovering and hurt her leg pretty bad, but would not tell me so I would not worry about her. I don't think I could have done so well without her. So make sure you get the rest you need as well.

    Hi caretaker glad to hear that your husband is doing so well, keep up the good work of supporting him and being there when he needs. We are so blessed to have people like you in our life to keep up our hopes that we can make it and become survivors.

    Congratulations to the two of you for making it through some really tough treatment. Hopefully your husband will be able to eat soon and get the nutrients he needs to ace that marathon!

    Hi Bill,

    Rest is hard with our 8-month old daughter, who is currently teething. Smile But to be honest with you, I am glad that she is keeping us busy! It is hard sometimes, when deciding between spending time with our demanding little daughter or being there for my husband as he goes through these tough times. We've had excellent support so far - family, friends and coworkers, so that does make it easier for me/us.

    sounds like he is doing pretty good.  i will be paying for the last tx to go smoothly and that he can continue to train for his marathon.

    You should be proud indeed.  Your husband sounds like he has an iron will.  I too am a runner and can't imagine in my wildest dreams having run through radiation treatment.  I'm 8 months post treatment and just now fantasizing about someday running again.  He still has a bit to go through, but I can tell you that he will recover and feel good again.  I am doing very well now and feel almost normal.  Just waiting for my sense of taste to return.  If he has a feeding tube he might be wise to put in whey powder and an egg yolk a day to retain lean muscle mass.  It helped me.  I lost 9 lbs total and NO lean muscle mass.

    Thanks all for the encouragement. He is definitely more fatigued now, but he is doing well otherwise and is continuing to run. His mucositis/radiation burns/ sore throat have significantly healed up and he is starting to eat solids again. However his taste buds haven't come back, so he still prefers the boost vhc. He never got the feeding tube.
