Pathology Report

in Kidney Cancer #1

Ok I have finally gotten up the nerve to read my pathology report.  I know that the dr gave me the results after my surgery but I swear I was still so out of it that I could not remember anything that he said.  It has been on my mide for a while so I finally went and asked for the report.  

Can you all please tell me what pT3, pN0 mean?  It also says that that hte left kidney had clear cell renal cell carcinoma with sacromatoid differentiation neclear grade 4.  Does that mean stage 4?

    pT3 means that the primary

    pT3 means that the primary tumor is stage 3 and the pN0 means that it has not spread to nearby lymph nodes. The grade 4 refers to Fuhrman grading, which is how closely the cells resemble regular kidney cells.

    Grades

    the grades range 1-4; the higher the grade, the less differentiation, meaning the less resemblance to the normal cell.

    Grade 4 is less desirable and indicates a more developed cancer tumor.  Sarcomitid differentiation is generally not a good indicator, but  they usually give a percentage to indicate the severity.  Your Doctor should spend some time going over these results and explaining the implications of the findings.

     I would also recommend that you talk with a oncologist if you are not already doing so.  I was told I didnt need to by my Urologist but it is the general consensus here that one should consult a oncologist no matter the inital outlook.

    Do not pass Go...

    Anyone who has a significant portion of their tumor(s) identified as either sarcomatoid or rhabdoid should immediately get themselves under the care of an oncologist who is experienced with advanced renal cancers.  These are potentially very aggressive and require expert supervision.
