Kirstykat,

Sorry you had to look us up, but sometimes the bark (hearing the words Kidney Cancer) is worse than the bite. A lot depends on the size of the compkex cyst which you did not share with us. The additional scans were to check for mets (metasticising) if it is Cancer and if it spread. Get back to us after you meet with the doctors and if you want to share, how big the littke buggar is.

All of us here have had a neperectomy or partaial and it is not the end of the world by any means.Mine was 12 years ago. Faye across the street is 82 and her neph was 18 years ago.

Do not get hung up on the C word. We all heard it from no where and went thru the same emotions you are going thru.  Now is the time to fight back.

Hi Kirsty...something is not adding up here. First you had a cyst and they were able to drain it? How did they go about doing that? Then you find out after they drain the one, that you have another large mass, cyst and stone in the same kidney and also a small cyst in right kidney? What kind of doctors did you see?  Did you see a kidney cancer specialist?  What were the results of the cyst they drained? Surely after 11 days they have those reports. Do you have a copy of any of the tests they took? Please try to get a copy of all written reports of each and every test you take from hereon in.  Did they think you had a kidney infection? Alot of questions to think about. If you can post more details we can give you an answer.  But from what you posted, is it  possible it was a kidney infection since there is a stone, cysts on both kidneys and they were able to drain it? What made you go to the hospital? Did you have blood in urine, pain, fever, night sweats, high blood pressure? Lots of things to consider, but you can start with the results of the fluid they drained.  I would be sure to see an RCC specialist before i decide on anything else.  Wishing you all the best.

Hi I had been having night sweats thought nothing of it then had pain in back and side temp of 39.4 really not well took to hospital and ultrasound done then ct then moved hospitals they said cyst and need to drain done this with some kind of rod and a tube and bag was put on. Few days later they done another scan and was discussed with other speicealists but they were not telling me much just said don't want to leave kidney in and it be a problem but don't want to take out and it be healthy. The fluid drained was negative cultures. Was called in once I had been home 3wks to see consultant and he said I have a stone in left kidney but they more worried about the upper pole complex mass and that I had a smaller complex mass on right kidney so dye ct scan to be had and see me urgent in clinic after they discussed my results of suspected cancer. The only thing he said is it would be open surgery due to how bad it is and being right on a major archery. Am waiting now for my call to go back up as was told today or tomorrow I'm just very anxious and want some answers. Hope this helps give you a better picture is all I know at the moment and THANKYOU   P.S head was all over the place not sure of size sure he said 5cm I know when he put image up it was just over half of my kidney that was a dark mass on the screen I will ask a lot of questions when I see him again thankyou

Kristy,

At 5cm you it is likely that with the surgery alone you should have a full recovery. The removal of the Kidney (a Nephrectomy) is major, but routine surgery. You will get thru this and everything should be fine.

Kristy... I get concerned when I read posts like yours...  It really bothers me that a doctor can not tell the difference between a cyst and a tumor.  And it is more worrysome that they tried to "drain" it.  Not sure what "specialists" you have seen, but you need to check it out, ASAP.  I suggest you get someone to go with you for your next appointment, or at least you should write down all  your questions.  If that doctor does not give you good explainations, then RUN to a better doctor.  What type of tests were done..?  A properly done CT scan with contrast will tell the tale, as long as the right people are reading it.

The doctor you want should have Kidney Cancer experience.. lots of it.. you do not want to be in the hands of a "newbie".  Typically University Hospitals are better.  You did not say where you are.. someone here may have a referral for you.  No time to be shy or sit back an accept whatever you are being told.  Be strong and ask questions..

Ron
