Worst Time Magazine Cover of the Year?

As critiqued in “Slate” (very worthwhile reading):

http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/medical_examiner/2013/03/how_to_cure_cancer_time_magazine_s_april_1_cover_is_wrong_and_cruel.html?wpisrc=most_viral

Sometimes we get carried away with hope from the hype; with reality comes strength.

Better health wishes,

John

    The Reality Is....

Everyone's going to die one day. It's in the fine print on our Birth Certificates...

I really do see hope for

I really do see hope for better treatment options with the aggressive team approach that SU2C is promoting in the arti le that you posted Phil but I also think the article that John posted about the Time magazine cover is accurate with a lot of valid points.

  • Time Was Very Revealing

To me it was revealing that researchers have been working in their own little "stovepipes" for almost a half century, since President Nixon declared the War on Cancer.  To me bringing the best, brightest snd most talented together into a team, funding them properly and generously, overseeing their work rigorously, and adding some short-term deadlines to keep the pressure up is a "no brainer" and is like "NFL 101."   I'm glad to see Hollywood took the lead and is using their model to light a fire under these people's ****.  Without taking anything away from the amazing advances they have already facilitated and their hard work and dedication, let's remember that "eggheads," no disrespect intended, are "eggheads" for a reason, they ask questions the rest of us don't know enough to ask.  However, from an operational sense, too often "eggheads" get mired in the details and develop a kind of tunnel vision as they search for the fine details losing sight of the larger purpose.  The Hollywood model that creativity and vision or fine, but you have to "pay your way," if you will, by producing movies, may be just the shot in the arm needed to take the next steps in cancer research.

Of Course it Had Valid Points...

They could have used a different Headline for sure but they're selling magazines. The article itself spoke of advances and a new team approach to dealing with cancer which is really thousands of diseases, not just one. To me, it's promising. To others, it's a balloon waiting to be pricked

    Sometimes…..

    Sometimes…..

we put too much stock into things we truly want to believe in. The “snake oil” salesmen used the pitch to great success! They pried on the unsuspecting; on those that needed some sort of  “snake oil” remedy to survive. Those that capitalized on those that were so needy, thrived on their backs.

Chemical therapy has it’s benefits, and it’s faults. The “donated” money that is spent for research is almost never-ending to those that can claim it as a tax write-off. Who in their right mind, would want to shoot the cash-cow that’s been supplying them with the milk they need?

Being complacent is being too trusting of those that say they are “helping”, without ever questioning their motives, or their claims. It only encourages the industry to continue down the “snake oil” path.

That sir, was the point of that article. The industry should be warned, that there are serious demands for them to do better; that the continuance of the same old products in new wrappers simply will not do.

Will it matter? Probably not, since the fear of dying of cancer drives most of us to the very hands of those that might be picking our pockets on the way to our graves.

It’s sobering, but facing reality has a habit of sobering one up.

    “We won’t be fooled again?”

My sincere hopes for longevity and good health to all,

    John
