Yup we've got ours in too. We have two gardens, one on the side of the house that is about 20 x 12 (tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, chives) and one at the back of our property that is 2 x 80 (asparagus, grape tomatoes, potatoes, onions). Not sure about your area since you aren't that far from us but here we have a lot of clay so it's hard to grow a lot of root vegetables. Just a fact for our area - did you know that Garden City was named that because of it's rich soil and they had the best gardens. Maybe I'll ask hubby to go over and steal some of their soil Hope George feels better and glad that he is stable.

Thanks for your response. The Livonia Gardens are at 8 Mile and Newburgh. The soil is not bad. The city drops off dump trucks of compost and mulch, you just have to haul it to your garden. I did put down the wood chips between rows to help with the weeds and threw out some of the composed yard waste. Hope your garden is bountiful.

This year I used organic mulch. It keeps in the water, out the weeds and it looks phenomenal when wet. Really adds that finished touch.

We planted several varietals of tomatoes, squash, beans, onions, leeks, spinach and strawberries.

It keeps me in the sun, and gets some healthy food.

Here in Tucson it's pretty hard to garden. 100+ heat requires more water than it's worth. Have George try LOMOTIL for the diarrhea, it \ works. Have a great summer.

I'm afraid I'm with Danker on this one. We put in tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons(I think) a few years back, but the heat and the tripled water bill was too much. It's hard enough just to keep the yard fairly green and if you get brown spots, the city gives you a citation. Our high tomorrow is supposed to be 109. I long for the beautiful green of Kentucky.

It is great to hear of you rgardening news as it reminds us all that life does go on despite this diagnosis. One of the down sides of this site is it is so cancer focused (which is its whole point and strength as well). However it is important to remember we all have lives to live despite the cancer and getting on with our gardening or whatever else is in our lives is what keeps us sane.

Hope it all grows well- here in England it has been a cold start to the spring so things are growing slowly but the sun is coming out now and my lettuces are finally starting to flourish. Just need to keep the slugs away!

What is spaghetti squash????? Never heard of that. I live on 11 acres and have beautiful garden areas BUT...I had to stop planting gardens about 5 years ago because the darn deer ate my whole garden....no matter what I do...they wipe me out. I MUST have had an entire herd here 1 night a few years back because they wiped my ENTIRE garden out in 1 night.... I was so mad I cried. We fenced in the back yard but its real shady except for the pool area. So this year I planted 3 tomatoe plants and 1 blackberry plant in big pots ON ROLLERS. Now I roll them wherever the sun hits best around the pool.... whether thats beside the diving board or going down the steps..... the damn deer AIN'T getting them this year!!!!! Give George a hug for me and you take care of yourself! Love ya

Spaghetti squash is great! We didn't plant any this year, but do some years. When you cut open the squash, the meet inside is all like spaghetti. You can even use it like you would use spaghetti, but it is better for you. I love it baked with a bit of parmesan sprinkled on it.

We had deer issues that got worse every year. As more and more building has gone on around us, the deer are losing their habitat and losing farm fields to nibble in. So a few years ago we had to fence ours in - 6 foot fence, with chicken wire at the bottom to keep the rabbits out too. It doesn't work to keep chipmunks and gophers out, and that is our biggest problem now. We downsized when the fence went up. I always had 5,000 square feet and did a lot of canning and freezing. Now we have about 3,000 square feet. This year we planted two different types of lettuce, spinach, bunching green onions, peas (edible pods), green beans, yellow zucchini & green zucchini, tomatillos, cucumbers, butternut squash, cantalope, watermelon, two dozen tomatoes (Early Girl, Better Boy, Big Boy, Cherry, and Roma), and two dozen peppers - lots of bells and several different hotter varieties. We stopped growing the less expensive vegetables - especially the ones that need a lot of space like corn. This year I'm keeping my herb gardens in pots on the front porch for easy access so I use them more. I have mint, cilantro, sage, basil, purple basil, rosemary, thyme, and oregano. And outside the garden we have catnip for our cats, rhubarb, asparagus (already done for the season), and chives. I haven't had berries for a few years, so this year I got one of those hanging topsy-turvy planters and planted strawberries - Everbearing and JuneBerries. It has been wonderful to feel well enough to garden again!
