We spent yesterday (Saturday) with friends in Friesland. This is where the 11-cities skating race would have been run, had the ice been strong overall.

I took my skates, and skated where the race would have come thru the town in which our friends live. Sun was shining, cold but fun...with LOTS of people on the ice...

We then got in the car and drove to the edge of a frozen inland sea. This, too, would have been part of the race, so there were MANY out skating on this piece of ice that normally hosts boats and ships of all sizes. There, for the first time in 15 years, there were horse races. Not just the beautiful Friesian horses, but these fantastic sleds that the horses pulled. The horses are fitted with special non-slip shoes, and they run FAST on the hard ice. It was GLORIOUS!!! And there were many people dressed in traditional clothing, as well (not me...*smile*...I was having a hard enough time staying warm...). And at an outside stall, there was snert (thick pea soup), warm sausages, coffee, hot chocolate, and gluwine...a special warm wine spiced with cinnamon and other flavors...mmmm!!!

Today, Sunday, started off early driving to a swap meet. Then over to a preview of an art auction in Arnhem. Now home, doing laundry, and watching the skaters across the street on the frozen canal (I've skated this before, and, I decided that since yesterday I spent a full day outside, today was OK to not...). And, it just started to snow..so it will be very cold out...

Glad to see that you are
Glad to see that you are skating without incident. No falling is the rule. Sounds like a glorious day. It sure would have been exciting to have the 11 city race but perhaps next year. Enjoy your day indoor today. Did you get anything at the swap neet?

    ~sounds wonderful~
or should i say "Vooonderful"...? I grew up with horses, and just can imagine how lovely and powerful they looked with the sleds running on the ice! I am not fond of wine ( really..i know, how silly, I do like sangria) but that spiced wine sounds nice~warm too! Back in your snug little house watching the skaters~just sounds like heaven!

You really do squeeze a lot
You really do squeeze a lot out of life. I believe this started after you retired. My DH is retiring in May (this May) and we want to get more out of life too. I have a blog where I talk about my adventures but they really are silly things but I guess that is because I'm silly. Anyway in May the real adventure begins. We will move our stuff to a house we own that needs remodeling and we ought to be doing that. We decided that could wait and we are taking a road trip to visit friends we haven't seen in years. But I don't think we will have the pace you set. I'd be exhausted! Glad you didn't fall this time!

    It sounds so wonderful!
Pass me a glass of that "gluwine" Kathi, while I'm lacing up my skates. Coming from upstate NY, we kids used to skate on the pond at the end of our street every winter. Oh, what fun we had.

I love your travelogs--makes me want to plan a trip (which I plan to do after I find out my treatment plan).

Just keep having a wonderful time and sending us periodic reports!

    Hugs, Renee
