Carl update

Options
I get so busy with life. Kids still need attn, work, hubby etc I just don't make it here though I really feel I could use the support as the caretaker. Reading others travels helps me understand as we go thru this.

Anyhow Carl had his last CT Scan for his colorectal cancer in July all was said to be good, labs scans all looked clean, October Labs said to look good nothing to cause alarm, was back in hospital over Thanksgiving week was said to be a blockage in upper intestine that seemed to work itself out. Last week went in for what was hopefully his last CT Scan for 1 yr only for them to discover a large tumor in his liver. Immediately dr. said stage 4 you have a year maybe 2 if you do chemo said he didn't think it was operable but with our permission offered to send stuff to an dr. in Denver. We said yes thru our stunned state. That dr. sent back same feeling of stage 4 wants petscan. Did that yesterday. Went in for results today and still saying stage 4 but the dr. here doesn't want to touch it- is strictly sending him to Denver at this time. He gave differing scenarios of possible options. He said obviously Carl can't go off his labs because according to them nothing is wrong. This happened in the first place too when he was dx with colorectal cancer. Seems to just hit wham here I am. We are told chemo is our best option this time. Last time he was gray area as to do it or not so we opted for herbals and radiation. He stopped the herbals midway thru as he was feeling better not taking them than when he did take them. We are going herbals again only sticking with them, chemo, surgery, radiation whatever will help.

Just frustrating you do what ever you are suppose to so you can be healthy and you get this sick, yet those that don't seem to care about their health or what they do to harm those around you and they are healthy as can be it seems anyhow. I know in my heart this isn't entirely true just frustrated. That here is an amazing man, husband and father and he is going thru this. He hasn't been back to work in 1 1/2 yrs since date of dx of colorectal.

For those been down this road .... does everyone here throw markers? His has steadily been 1 from the beginning and bumped to 4 this round first time it has ever moved or changed. His liver panels were elevated this time but never before. Can you really go from "0" to stage 4 in a matter of a few short months?? Could this be anything but another tumor?

Just so frustrated and scared. We are currently waiting on Denver and will see what happens from there. Sounds like chemo is inevitable this time so that is new and scary thought. Any light or help anyone can shed that would be great esp on things that have gotten you thru.

Oh and another thing since surgery his hands go cold or at times numb, his "equipment" isn't working quiet right. He has desire but that is it. He was doing testosterone shots but that didn't do anything for that portion and now his levels are a bit high so has stopped them. Now and then even his foot goes to sleep as well. Could this just be the nerve bundles they took out with the tumor 1 1/2 yrs ago? He has had issues with fatigue and even memory issues even since no more radiation. That was a year ago in Nov when he finished treatment just how long does it take to recoup? I asked the dr. this very question in October and he said he should be past the worse of it by now, but now reading it is side effects of liver too so maybe he was having signs before it showed up??

I don't know so much going thru my mind as mother, wife, caregiver and sole provider I am frustrated.

    Dear Renee,
    So sorry to hear

    Dear Renee,

So sorry to hear about the new recurrence. I am not able to answer your questions, but I am sure some one on this board will.
Ofcourse you are worried and fustrated, you have a right to be. Just hang in there and take it one day at a time.
Make sure that you also look after your self, wife, mother caregiver and provider is a tall order.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Hugs, Marjan

    Dear Renee
So sorry to hear that there has been a recurrance for your hubby.

As for the Stage 4 lable...any time there is a distant metastisis of cancer, it ups the staging to Stage 4.

Labs (CEA) are not a reliable indicator for all, as is apparently the case for your hubby.

Apparently Denver has your closest big city hospital. The University Hospital at Denver was listed as on of the top 50 cancer centers in the US.

Praying that the doctors there will have some good options to offer.

    Hugs,

    Sorry to hear
I'm sorry to hear the current update. Since his cancer has spread to the liver that is why they upped him to stage 4. They will probably want him to do chemo for some time. Mine was colonrectal and spread to live and I've been doing chemo every two weeks since Jun 09. Can't say it is any fun but it has keep the tumors under control. The side effects vary for everyone. I pray everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Did you end up doing a resection? They aren't sure it is an option at least at this point and we I think via our talk last may just do the port get started with chemo and give us a little time to regroup before any trips to Denver.

I try to find the blessings in Cancer and now and then I see them. I love spending more time with my husband w/o him whisking off to work for who knows how many hours a day or if I will see him all for a week due to the nature of being a wrecker driver. My job offers flexibility so that is helpful and know that if I need time off I have a job to come back to. For a mom that was fulltime sahm when cancer struck I got very lucky re entering the workforce.

Anyhow gives me hope for longer time seeing you are at this 2 1/2 years now. I know they can't realistically give time stamp of how long one has as no one kows but to hear them say any amount of time was really hard to grasp. I think now I know why when someone passes someone actually has to say they are dead.

Thanks everyone for helping me understand how they can stage this as his dr. wasn't clear in that dept.

    I see some real similarities
I see some real similarities between Carl and myself. I have been stage IV for over 6 years. I have had mets in my liver 3 times. Each time my CEA was never above 1.5 so it sounds Carl is like me where CEA is NOT a good marker. As for his tumor. My most recurrence revealed an 8cm tumor which my surgeons answer was to remove my entire right lobe which he did along with part of my diaphram and abdominal wall which was affected by the tumor. I would get several opinions. The only reason that they might be saying it is not operable is that it is wrapped around a major artery.

Good luck and keep surching for the right answer.

    Hi Renee,I just want to
    Hi Renee,
I just want to share our story with you because I want you to realize that anything can happen and you should not give up hope...
My husband was very ill and went to ER Feb 1st 2011... we were shocked and broken hearted when we were told that they found a large tumor in rectum and could see that it had spread to his liver (many mets). We had no knowledge of colon cancer or treatments on day of diagnoses and we both were in shock and started grieving. The same day the local clinic arranged for us to see a surgeon which didn't allow us any hope. He was actually angry with my husband for being 55 years and had not had a colonoscopy at 50. He was very cold and insensitive about the condition my husband was in. The day after diagnoses we went to an appt with onc that told us he has 2 years, some less, some more, you need a miracle (also informed us that surgery would never be an option). We accepted what this small town doc told us and continued to grieve. He started chemo (5fu) and did 13 rounds with scan at about half way (showed good response to treatment). After 13th treatment we asked to be referred to the University of Wisconsin. Long story short they first told us that they didn't agree with the two year thing since he respnded so well to treatment. He had the tumor resected Oct 13th and RFA on one side of liver. He recouperated from that and had embolization on liver to encourage growth Dec 28th. We are so close to where we need to be and I believe GOD will answer our prayers.
Sorry for rambling... I better go rinse this color out of my hair so forgive any grammer or spelling. :)

    Surgery Scheduled
Denver surgeons seem to think best plan of action is start with surgery. scheduled at University for Feb 15th. 8 weeks after to start chemo. I would be lying if I said I wasn't scared out of my mind over this one. Thanks Jeff for your reports on your situation it helps to a point. They are saying they might need to take the gallbladder but I guess who needs one of those right :) and definitely part of the liver from what they are seeing now, but of course won't really know until they get in there.

    Prayers for Good Results
    Renee,
Prayers for good surgical results. Chemo is doable. Many people do chemo and pray for the opportunity to have surgery. Sounds like you have your husband in a good place for treatment. Thinking of both you and Carl as you begin this new stage in this journey.
