in Head and Neck Cancer #1
Andy had his ct scan on Friday and we get the results on Monday. If there is no disease progression, he continues the clinical trial protocol. If there is progression, he is out of the trial and we go back to the toolbox. Intense time here. Meanwhile, he has a blood clot in his lung which can be caused by chemo. He has to take blood thinner shots every day by injection until the c
Ot dissipates.. Anyone else develop a pulmonary clot?

    Hope Monday brings relief, and the trial continues. I'm sure someone on this site had to do injections for a blood clot, but I don't recall the member. Hope they see your post.

    Haven't been on the site for awhile and just checking in. My husband had blood clots in BOTH lungs during treatment (this past May) and had to do Lovenox (sp?) injections until November. Was not put on blood thinners after. Saying that, he also had a permanent vena cava filter put in at the time of his blood clots. Very scary, all of it. The worse part of his treatment (is that good or bad?) His doc said it was not as common to have blood clots with this type of cancer. I do hope this finds Andy on the uphill swing...take care.

    Robin, I hope you have had good news. If you are wondering whether Andy received Reolysin or placebo, the presence of a fever or mild flu like symptoms within one day of treatment is a good clue. Take care.

    Good news Monday
    Thank you for your words of encouragement. Andy had a positive report on Monday. We were both shocked, relieved, and immensely thankful!
    Anyhow, his tumors have all shrunk by a percentage that the doctor says is a good response, so we will continue on in the clinical trial! (Goodluck...We really can't determine whether Andy is getting reolysin because paclitaxel also causes Flu-like symptoms...go figure!)

    Appreciate you all very much. We hope to be an example to others who face metastasis that this cancer can be beaten again!

    I am so glad that things are looking up. I also had blood clots in legs and the lungs. They were the least bothersome of the many maladies I suffered from in the process but, at the same time, the most potentially deadly. In other words, all of those other things were going to bother me but couldn't kill me, but these were no problem unless they let go and caused a stroke or death. They did neither, obviously.

    Of course, when they were diagnosed it was about three weeks into rads and chemo and because my legs were hurting. I had played three hockey games that week including the night before. When they found them they wouldn't even let me out of the hospital and immediately started pumping me with blood thinners which I was on for a few months. We did the daily injections and, while my wife did them whenever I was home, I did them when traveling outside the country. Obviously, I didn't take these in my carry-on!

    I suppose if they had really told us specifically about this danger we would have been watching harder, but they told us about so many potential problems - many of which I had/have - that this probably got lost. Still, I am more cognizant of this when I am on long overseas flights, etc.

    Again, I am glad this one worked out and I pray that it will all work out for you. Doug

    Andy calculated his shrinkage tonight and he has had between 33 and 40 percent decrease in liver lesions since he started the trial 6 weeks ago. We were excited about that because we thought it was more like 20 percent! Headed in the right direction and praying we keep heading that way until the little buggers are all gone! Somebody has to be a miracle, right? Pick us, pick us!!! Hehe

    He also started some qi gong medical healing energy sessions. He's not exactly the type for that kind of thing but he is open to it. He actually felt a sensation while the therapist was working over his liver! Who knows!
