Whew!...and during the flight, my beau saved a man's life! (We were then moved to first class...too bad it was after dinner *smile*). As a result, ended up with a stopover in Chicago on our 'nonstop' flight....

Dutch hugs, Kathi

We were sitting in the cabin behind business class, and noticed alot of crew activity in that cabin. Next came the announcement "Is there a doctor on board?". My beau stepped up, and went into business class. There was a man in heart trouble, very grey (not good) color, and unable to speak. My beau was then joined by another passenger/ doctor on board, and together they attempted to start an IV, and gave the man CPR. The decision was made to turn back to Chicago and the request for emergency landing permission went out. My beau got special permission to sit on the floor with the patient while landing...no seat belts fastened this time *smile*. We ended up on the ground for about an hour. All told, we were about 1 1/2 hours late to Amsterdam. Missed connections, etc...a headache for KLM. But the man and his wife were safely taken off the plane and taken to the nearest hospital. The purser later shared that this was the biggest emergency situation he had seen in the 33 years of his flying. My beau is a hero! And we heard later from the captain that the man was doing better in the hospital. YEA!

Last year, same flight, he was asked to help with a woman with severe abdominal pain...on that occasion, tho, we didn't need to land...

Hugs, Kathi

That must have been both scary and exciting! What kind of medicine does your beau practice?

but he was a GYN practicing Infertility...his specialty...got his PhD with it...so I guess he is a 'doctor doctor'....*smile*

Last year's patient was more in his specialty....abdominal pain in a woman....

He always jokes with people, if they ask him something outside of his specialty..."I can't help you with that, but I CAN give you a terrific Pap smear!"...of course, he went thru full medical school, interned at the Mayo Clinic, practiced at UCLA and Loma Linda Medical Center before opening his private infertility practice in Upland...all the right stuff...he is usually fairly modest...so I must brag for him...

When I get asked (yes, I do...) something out side of my experience (somehow people think that because my beau is a doctor, I should know things), I just say "I am not a doctor, but I wash the underwear of one!"....*smile*

Thanks for sharing your and your beau's adventure. So very glad that the passenger he helped was last reported doing better.

Sounds like your beau is in the right place at the right time...often.

Give him a big huga and a smacking kiss for being a hero!

Hugs,

Marie who loves kitties

So glad that your beau was able to help. Glad you made it to your destination even though it was detoured :)

I'm betting you are so proud of him!! At the airport in San Jose, CA in 2006 three of us did the same for a man, but it was at the luggage carousal. They were very nice and in August of 2006 presented us with plaques with letters from the airport and mayor of San Jose. It was nice to see the man a decent color and standing upright. Until they called the week before the press conference thingie, I didn't know if he had lived or died.
How wonderful it must feel for him and you both!!!

So, my beau just got a very grateful email from the man's wife. It seems that once they reached the ER, his heart stopped completely. They were able to immediately start it again, but had the decision to land not have happened, he would have coded over the north Atlantic.

My beau was feeling a bit guilty about whether it was overreaction to make an emergency landing, costing KLM lots of money from lost connections, etc....now he knows it was the right decision...he and the other doctor on board really DID save this man's life!!!!!

I'm so proud!!! *smile*
