Just came back from the Dr. This was not a heart attack or blockage, it is ET! The chest and sternum is covered in bone marrow and it is an episode of the ET. He explained that a hematologist/oncologist would have recognized right off that it was not his heart as they would be familiar with ET. He gave him medicine to take when this happens again as it most likely will, and increased his schedule of medicine for the ET. He says it was the morphine that they gave him that took care of the episode... So things are looking up for him! Much better than a mile heart attack!!!!

Spent most of yesterday in the ER. Not for me but with my 25 year old son who moved in to help me. He has ET which is Essential Thrombo Cytosis, which is a blood disorder. He had chest pain that radiated down both arms and his throat. ER doctor thought it was an infection in the lining of the heart. The cardiologist thinks he has had a mild heart attack from the platelets sledging in his veins. They gave him nitroglycerin tablets which gave him a horrible headache but did nothing for the pain, then gave him a blood thinner injection, which seems to have lessened the pain.

The cardiologist admitted him to the heart floor and has been running tests all morning. His heart enzymes were higher than they would see for an infection or virus, He says if he was any older they would do an angiogram? where they go through an artery to find out where the blockage is as there was no fluid or anything indicating infection on the heart echo. So.. I just talked to him and they did a stress test and more blood work to see if the enzymes have lowered, if not they will do the angio thing.

Bad news is that we went to the ER right by us but it is no longer on his insurance, and his insurance runs out on his 26th birthday in December, so we are working on Cobra. He just graduated and is working on his teaching credential. His dad has been working with insurance all morning and if they are going to do the procedure, he has to be transferred to another hospital.

At least he can stay on Cobra for 3 years with his condition he would have a hard time getting any insurance. He has an appointment with the Oncologist on Wednesday right after mine. They are pushing for a bone marrow transplant, but he does not like the side effects but it is the only possible cure for ET! He already has said he is not having one.....

My biggest fear is that I will not be around to help him! These diseases suck.

Thanks for hearing me vent... I swear Hawaii is looking good for Christmas!

    This sucks!
Seems that's become my most used phrase lately.....Carol, I can't imagine how difficult all this is...especially when it involves our children...wish I had some wonderful words of wisdom....I seem to be running short on those, lately!

I will say, if this hospital he's in is out of network for his insurance, it might be wise to move him, if possible, to transfer him to one that is in network, even if he doesn't need the procedure....even without the procedure, everyday the $$$$$ adds up....

Please know I am wishing the best for ALL of you...and sending hugs and prayers...

    OMG, Carol, you are dealing
OMG, Carol, you are dealing with a lot. Serious health issues do suck!

Hust so you know, I had an angiogram when I had a heart attack. No one could believe I was having a heart attack as I was not overweight, had no family history and had no risk factors--other than my history of breast cancer treatments. My enzymes were normal at first, but went up 12 hrs later.

The angiogram was painless and I was semi-awake when they did it. I was very comfortable throughout. It let us know that I did have a heart attack involving a smaller artery and now I am on appropriate meds that should help to prevent a recurrence.

I am praying for you and your son and your entire family.

    Just picked him up
We talked to the cardiologist, he says he thinks it was either a blockage from the et platelets, but it could be an infection, he admitted he didnt know. However, as the pain went away following the nitro tabs and the blood thinner combined, he wants to add more ET meds to what the onco is giving him. Son said he will wait now and talk to our onco at his appt on Wednesday and see what he thinks, he has the results of the tests. The heart enzymes are slightly elevated over yesterday, and yesterday they were too high. He says the pain in his chest and arms is gone so.....

We both see the same Dr. on Wednesday, I am sure he will know more as he specializes in cancer and blood disorders.

Another day in our lives. Thanks everyone

    oh Carol...
You're right, sometimes we get no break from stressful situations, but times get better and we have good days. I'm very sorry you are dealing with this on top of your own care. I hope everything gets better (financially and health-wise) for your son. Sometimes I wish we all lived closer to each other so we can hug each other tight when we need that hug. Right now I wish I can hug you.

Please keep us posted. I'll have you and your son in my prayers.

    Your Son
Your plate is very full, with your own problems and that of your son. I am so very sorry. He is so very young to be facing all this.

I thought the insurance companies could no longer penalize those of us who have preexisting conditions anymore.

    Best wishes to you all,

    Doris

    It has to do...
With this particular hospital being out of the network...in other words, if a particular hospital or physician, etc. Isn't within the person's insurance "network"they don't pay or pay only a small portion...it's how all insurance companies operate today,,,, ...my cousin learned this the hard way after receiving a bill for $17,000.00 for surgery from a surgical center that was out of network... she thought it was in network.... But didn't make absolutely sure...it has nothing to do with pre-existing conditions...

    Chen and everyone else, we
Chen and everyone else, we all stand together on this board which is why it is so important. Now if we could only get more money directed to research maybe we would have a better outcome when we are stage iv with bc, as well as research monies going to all of these other cancers!

Hope you are all doing well. Another trip tomorrow to the onco, I will know what kind of chemo will be my next line of defense as well as seeing if they can take any of this fluid off my lungs to give relief!

However, I will continue to fight till I can't fight anymore. (including insurance companies)

    Thanks everyone,
    Carol

I will. I get down with the news and have moments, but every day that I am here I still consider a gift.... my married son is cooking and we will play left, right, center for quarters which is a lot of fun. I try to enjoy everyday, sometimes it is easier than others, but being with the boys is what I truly enjoy and I have really been lucky to love my daughter in law, as well as my 25 year old's girlfriend.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone else on this board!

    Love and prayers,

    Good Grief!
It's 2:00 a.m. on the west coast, can't sleep, decided to log in/on and this is the first post I see!

No one told me when I became a mother that I would always be a mother and that my children would always be at the forefront of my worry list. I don't want to say I know how you feel, because I don't, but I understand your feelings and worries for you adult child. I hope his visit on Wednesday provides some direction and he's able to make decisions that will put you mind at ease - and of course, that improve his health.

Many times since I've been on this cancer-go-round, I've enountered people with illnesses/challenges like your son. I've never heard of his disease before. There are so many other serious life-threatening disorders that others have to deal with, yet as humans, we all seem to cower when someone is diagnosed with cancer. Sort of gets me off my cancer soap box for a while.

Take care of your son and have a blessed Thanksgiving. Needless to say, I'm sending my prayers to you.
