Tony is on avastin, xeloda and oxipilatin and today is day 3 after the 2nd iv treatment. well starting yesterday he has very bad pain in both calves. one worse than the other. it can't be attributed to exercise. he is prone to blood clots but it would be weird that his both calves hurt. has anyone experienced this? thx. alex

    Calve pain
    Hi Alex,
I did have this side effect. I am currently in my 8 cycle of 8 of xeloda and oxaliplatin.(XELOX)
After my first through fifth infusion of oxaliplatin, my calves would become rock solid, cramped up for a few days. I asked the onc. nurse about the cramping and she suggested that I take tums with calcium. She believed a lack of calcium was the cause. I tried the tums but it didn't seem to make a difference. I then asked my onc., who suggested that I use a heating pad to elevate some of the pain. I can't tell you if this worked or not. I just walked through it. Perhaps, it is worth a try. I haven't experienced any cramping after my 6,7,or 8 infusion because the onc. had lowered the dosage of the oxaliplatin due to neuropathy. All I can tell you for sure is that I had this side effect and it's probably nothing that should cause panic. I'd call your onc. in the morning and see if he/she has any other suggestions. Perhaps, some pain meds. are in order.

    Muscle
Muscle cramps and pains in my calves were quite common for me on the Oxy, I sometimes couldn't control where my legs would go for the first couple of days very well, quite frankly I looked like someone with MS, my hands would pull in weird ways, along with my fingers, and walking wasn't all that great, I would use a cane for a couple of days, then all would be well. I think just4brooks is still suffering from leg pain and I think he's off of the oxy. You might inquire of him.

I had these cramps and pain in not only my calves but my feet after my fourth treatment of oxaliplatin/Xeloda about 12 days ago. I also had neuropathy/numbness from hip to foot on the first evening after infusion with oxi to the point I really could not walk that night. The numbness was improved enough that I could walk the morning after, and that's when all the cramping and muscle spasms started in my calves and feet. The muscle spasms and pain in my feet lasted several days but the ones in my calves only lasted three days.
Meanwhile the neuropathy in my right foot is still coming and going nearly two weeks after.

I had not had ANY of these side effects with the first three treatments and it took till the fourth infusion of oxaliplatin to really get miserable and not have the side effects go away in a day or two.

While the foot and calf pain and cramps have subsided, I still have neuropathy in my right foot and today my mouth, tongue and lips broke out in mouth sores. Although I had been told this might happen, I am surprised that it happened so far past a chemo infusion. I have my fifth infusion this week.

    I had them also
And after the 2nd treatment. My worst complaint is the jaw pain. It will subside some but lasts the 3 weeks, and has since this started. I too get the numb leg feeling all the way down my leg. It starts in the infusion chair, but goes away in a few days. Treatment #4 is next week. I'll be glad when this is all over!!!!

    Leg pain
I, too, had leg pain (or more numbness, actually). I could barely walk, felt clumsy, unsteady. My first reaction, was to sit down, but each time I kept walking slowly, for about a quarter or one-half mile, and it went away. It might be worth a try to see if your husband could walk some. Still, let doctor know. Don't want it to be clots

    Your post was a reminder
...that I had the jaw pain for the first time along with other side effects for the first time after treatment #4 with oxaliplatin/Xeloda regimen. It was in both jaws and lasted several days and occurred everytime I opened my mouth to put in pills or food.
