I was told my sister has stage 1 carcinoma. Can anyone tell me if a lumpectomy worked instead of having the breast removed with this type of cancer? Thanks for your input.

Hi Julie, for myself I had
Hi Julie, for myself I had stage 2B, grade 3 with node involvement. They wanted me to have a lumpectomy but I opted for a mastectomy. I have small breasts and it seemed ridiculous to me to try and save it. I was happy to get rid of the whole thing. However, many women choose the lumpectomy and do quite nicely. I take it she hasn't had her surgery yet. I wonder what the surgeon recommends for her case.

    Hi Julie,
Everybody does what they feel is best for themselves. Stage one is early diagnosis, so a lumpectomy should suffice. Many women opt for the mastectomy to cut down the odds of recurrence. That's a decision your sister will have to make after conferring with her doctors. It's nice she has a sister like you doing some research, kuddos to you..

Julie .. This is such a personal decision -- hard to gauge
what direction to walk, research, or check into. Please go on line == breastcancer.org, is another terrific site that describes in detail -- the various types of breast cancer as well as level details regarding treatment.

Dr. Susan Love wrote a great book ..you may want to read it -- offers some many 21st Century thoughts.

    Gentle hugs,

    Strength, Courage and Hope.

    Stage 2
I was Stage 2, grade 3 (2 out of 15 lymph nodes involved) and I had a lumpectomy. According to my docs, chemo and rads should do the trick without needing a mastectomy.
