Type 2 Diabetis

in Head and Neck Cancer #1
I have been taking Metformin for almost 2 years now, and it has done a fairly good job of keeping my levels on track. When I had my first infusion on monday, the nurse said the chemo would affect the levels, today it was @ 391...does anyone else here see higher readings during the chemo treatments, and if so what can or do you do to bring them back into a more normal range.

    Type II
    I was a Type II Diabetic heading into the treatment and I was taking metformin too.

    I let the folks doing the chemo look after the bloodwork. They gave me insulin on a couple of occasions early-on.

    On the bright side:

    About two or three weeks into treatment the doctors told to quit taking the medications for high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol. I came out 100 pounds lighter after treatment and all those health problems went away.

    How long?
    I have some experience feeding folks with type II, but I doubt that experience is useful in terms of the added stress of chemo - I hope your doctors will guide you in this. I do know that I found nutrition consultants tend to focus on type I issues - not always the the same.

    Other than the blood sugar, how are you doing?

    Doing well.. in the office
    Doing well.. in the office today, the 5FU pump is a royal pain...but it gets taken of friday afternoon

    Diabetes and Chemo
    Glenn had the exact same experiences as Rush1958. He was 305 lbs. when he started treatment and the big dose of Dexamethsone drove his blood sugar up quite high.

    He lost 80 lbs over the course of treatment and his Diabetes and Blood Pressure meds went away.

    The doctors love this particular side effect even though they admit it's the hard way to get this result.

    Lap band
    My severe type dissapeared the day i had my band implanted. The effect on type 2 still mystifies the health pros but as i am about to start radiation and had my tongue remodeled in an operation they emptied my band and said put on weight huh i am an expert at that thats why I had the band. So now i have the type 2 worries. But sugar levels are still good even though i gained 25 kilos 55lbs.Maybe my theory will prove out that the band actes like an internal acupuncture.
    It was not diet or weight loss that brought my levels down as they were normal the day after the operation.

    From what I've read, you are not far off RayTodd - the band seems to, perhaps by sending out the "I'm full" signal, cause the hormone balance in your blood to shift from the glycogen-to-fat and the eat-more cycles to the we-have-lots-so-let's-burn-it-off and eat-less cycles.

    Plenty more to study there.
