My sister is 29 years old and has a five year old daughter. She is scheduled to have a hysterectomy with debulking on Tuesday. We found out she has ovarian cancer through CT scan at ER this past MOnday. CT scan said peritoneal carcinomatosis with omental caking sedcondary to ovarian neoplasm. Her Ca 125 is > 3000. This seems like a helpful place to come for support and education through experience. We have a family history of Breast CA and ovarian CA. No one as young as my sister. What a scary ride we are in for...

    Your sister is so young.
OVCA sure doesn't age discriminate. Her youth will certain help in the recovery from surgery. Yes, this is the place to be for advice and support. Does she have an GYN/ONC to do her surgery?

    Yes
She does have a GYN/ONC from Mass General who will be doing the surgery here at our local hospital. Because she has no health insurance she cannot go to Mass General. And, if she ends up doing IP chemo we will have to travel almost 2 hours one way. That is the closest hosp. that does it and excepts self pay patients. I am so angry with our healthcare system right now!

    way to young
to get this awful disease!!!. I hope the surgery goes well for your sister..Did you say she will get IP chemo?..that is possible as long as her bowels are not part of her surgery. If so, would she still have to drive so long for tx. This stinks. I am so sorry. There must be help out there to pay some of the bills. Try medicaid Or ssi. Good luck...val

    Medicaid
Medicaid is giving her a hard time. They requested a meeting for Thursday to meet face to face. She will have to sign a waiver giving me permission to speak to them on her behalf(she will still be in the hospital). I WILL make it so they will help her. Her GYN/ONC said that if her surgery is not "optimal" she cannot get IP then, she can stay in this area for chemo. I still cannot believe this has happened.

    This disease is so difficult
for everyone concerned. I know the people around me suffered right along with me. I pray your sister's surgery goes well. I worked for the county issuing benefits to people. It can be an arduous process but try to get them everything they need quickly so your sister can receive medical benefits as quickly as possible. Has she applied for State disability or SSI? I know it's a lot right now but take a deep breath. I think I was in shock for weeks after my diagnosis and was lucky to have people around me who took care of my bills and other paperwork. Your sister needs to concentrate all her efforts on fighting the disease. You are all in my prayers.
