What do you think of 4+ hours waiting time to see oncologist/NP? Do you think it's excessive?

I think it speaks for itself how good/bad the entire department is...there isn't an emergency or some such. They constantly misplace charts, frequently call to cancel appointments and then call back to un-cancel; generally just very disorganized.

I've learned not to call and ask ANYTHING the day before an appointment as this results in my chart being pulled and then invariably it cannot be found in time for my visit. This has happened four times.

On one occasion I had blood drawn the day before and the next day arrived for my appointment only to be told it had been cancelled.

When someone goes on vacation, nobody else can do that person's job which necessitates waiting for the person to get back from vacation. Have you ever heard of such nonsense?

It's not like they're under staffed...I just don't get it.

    No electronic medical record system?
That's rather archiac. This oncology office doesn't seem to have a very good track record. I'd sure look for one that does.

    Good luck.

    That's the most ridiculous
That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long time. Lord knows what happens if there's a real emergency. I say find a place that's more organized. We have enough to worry about with all the hassel that you're going through.

    I would
I would not wait that long--It is ridiculous--a patient's health is very IMPORTANT and should not be tossed aside like this office is doing. Find some other oncologist to see and fast.

Send a bill for the time you have had to wait--your time is important as well. Never pay a co-pay if you have had to wait and let your insurance company know what this office practices or doesn't practice---true patient care.
Let the hospital director know--if they are affiliated with a hospital--which they should be---because he/she may have no idea what is going on there and may need to have some heads roll.

Best of luck and many hugs,
    Margo

    Not acceptable
That kind of wait is not acceptable, rude, inconsiderate, and unprofessional. If an emergency (?) had arisen, they should have the common courtesy to let you know and opt for a reschedule. Barring even that, this is unacceptable.
I think I would go elsewhere...
    Good luck whatever you do,

I think this is down right
I think this is down right scary. I would almost think about reporting them to someone, not sure who though. Only for the reason that if charts and simple things are getting mixed up, what are they doing with the more serious issues. Let's hope treatments and medications aren't getting missed. I agree with the rest, it's time to move on, call your insurance company and find other choices.

Good Luck and I am so sorry you have to deal with this kind of professionalism.

    4 Hrs.
Is a 4 hr. wait unacceptable? YES!! I understand if something had happened but they could have at least told you. I've had to wait but nothing that excessive. They've always told me why. I agree with the others I'd find another doctor.

Fire Their A*& if you can
I fired a clinic for incompentence, rudeness, unprofessionalism. In a nutshell, two oncologists failed to read my chart that I was having a double mastectomy and were preparing me for uneeded radiation until I TOLD THEM,the Harvard educated radilogist told me not once, but twice that the surgeon would only take the worst looking parts of my sausage link lump out(hence leaving the rest of the precancer sit there),one nurse and neurologist failed to inform me that I had a blood clotting disorder that makes me at risk for blood clots all over my body until my family dr. found the results (nurse called and said she knew about it when I was in the hospital with mastecomy but decided to wait until I was more recovered to tell me...dumba#$ and then argued with me when I told her my HEMATOLOGY oncologist was handling it and she didnt realize he hematology deals with the study of blood),the surg tech of my wonderful surgeon twice forgot to give her messages from me (one was being that I had a green discharge from one of my drain holes. when I told the surgeon the next day at the appt. the infection looked better, she replied, i didnt know you had an infection),my new psychiatrist refused to put me on any sleep aids, anxiety meds while going thru the cancer and all this crap (i get print outs of every time my bp was taken at every appt and you can see huge spikes in my bp while each fool messed with my medical care, the ps argued with me in the hallway that there was no release of info signed to communicate with my psychiatrist cuz reconstruction is so mentally anguishing ( there WAS a signed consent on the computer in my file, i called the med records dept and had THEM call the ps since they refused to believe me. the nurse called two days later and I refused to speak to her). The last straw was April 28, 2011. I was scheduled for an ooprhectomy because I can no longer take anything for my godawful periods that are so bad I have to take vicodin for cramps, etc. The afternoon before the surgery, the **** surg tech called to tell me that she didnt read the ins. paper all the way thru and didn't realize that I had to sign a consent form for sterilization procedures 31 days in advance until the ins. company called them and told them they would not pay for the surgery. I went bullistic all over the clinic. Next I saw an ob-gyn at another clinic to discuss ooprhectomy. She was fired within minutes when she argued with me that DCIS is NOT CANCER, that it is pre-cancer, I fired back that by the time it gets to DCIS the cells have mutated into a true cancer, a step past atypical ductal hyperplasia and that it is PRE-INVASIVE NOT PRECANCEROUS.Told her that if that was her opinion she will not be my dr. and is fired and I stormed out. MY family dr. in may, referred me to the pain clinic for my severe PMPS, I talked to the ins lady, then the receptionist told me they will contact me for an appt. A month later, no word, my family dr calls their office and is told that they repeatedly contacted me and I didn't respond..ughhhh...I told my family dr. I did. The **** called, I called her back and left a message I spoke to her in May on the friday she left at 3.30 pm cuz the appt desk tried to call her to straighten something out and even left a message for her!!So because of her its taking me from May to July 1st to be seen. I now document everything and get copies of all records and dr communications. Thanks for lett me vent too, this crap is driving me crazy. I already have a severe anxiety disorder, depression, bipolar and if it wasnt for my loving partner, I think I would be in the psych ward again. the cancer was a breeze compared compared to the treatment of some medical personnel. Good luck and I hope you can find someone that you can trust for your treatment.

    ...
@ cinnamonsmile - wow I do believe you have a very good idea of the kind of idiotic BS that can and does happen. Unfortunately.

This IS at the hospital, that's where I go for treatment/office visits. When I called Patient Advocacy (last Monday) they told me that the oncology department just got a new manager and that things should be getting better. So I asked how long the new manager has been there and she said about two months. Well, I think SOME things might've been changed/done by THIS time.

No doubt, the director is fully aware of the problems going on but has his hands full with other pressing issues. Last November, this hospital was raided by the FBI I was there when it happened and it was real low key. But seriously how many hospitals get raided by the FBI? IMHO, patient care or rather lack thereof should be of upmost importance.

What might be a reasonable amount of time to wait? I'm going to say/stay about an hour and a half at the very most (unless there's an emergency) and after that I'm going to tell them that they can just explain to the doctor why I am no longer there.

I really don't know where else to go...maybe Loma Linda. I keep thinking that I'm nearly done with seeing these people so very often and then something else comes up. I hate change.

It seems during all my school years I was always the new kid as my family moved a lot. Sometimes 3 times or more within the same school year. I guess maybe that explains why I'm willing to put up with so much. I guess I'm just at odds with picking up and starting all over with new people even though, deep down, I know it must be better than what I'm dealing with now.

Anyhoo, thanks all for the insight! :D

    Unless they
Unless they have a reputation of literally curing cancer, I'd be sooooo out of there. A small wait seems reasonable but I don't think I've ever waited longer than 10 minutes to be initially ushered into a room.

Records should be computerized so if a file is misplaced, the entire office doesn't have to stop. It seems like they're not only archaic but totally disorganized.

Hopefully you can perhaps find another onc. who's staff will be a little more organized and patient friendly.

    wait time
wait time at my oncologist office is nil.
If my appt time is set up for 9:15 w/the nurse takes me in at 9:10 to do all the vitals and stuff and then the time w/the oncologist is 9:30 and I have never had to wait longer than 5 mins after my time to see my oncologist. If there is an emergency then they have another oncologist or NP who is also very familiar with your case come in but the nurses will always come in and ask me if I care to wait for my oncologist or if I would like to see someone else in the practice.

I love my staff--they communicate with each other and discuss cases with each other so everyone is aware of each others patients.

    same thing sorta
happened to my mom but she never waited four hours.. but a few times 2 hours...... (she had uterine, not breast cancer ) her gyn/onc. also a surgeon was constantly running late, he had 2 or 3 satellite offices, was often called back into surgery . They kept electronic and physical records and I remember at least once, them Misplacing her chart. What is it like when you finally get to see the onc. Does he take his time, answer your questions, listen to you, or is he always running, speed reading thru your chart, halfway down the hall while you're still trying to digest what he's saying. That's how my mother's onc. was , After she passed when I questioned him about certain things, he admitted to me that he "was overbooked yet again" .. I agree,Run don't walk to the nearest exit...
