Scared and need advise...

in Ovarian Cancer #1
Hi Everyone -

I have been looking around this site for a while, and am inspired by your strength and support.

I have NOT been diagnosed with OC, and hope that I am not, but here is my story. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I am a 31 yo mother of 3 who has been experiencing OC symptoms for about 10 days. Very gassy, burning hip pain, diarrhea, general crampiness and just not "feeling" right. My mother had Breast Cancer when she was my age, and my father was just diagnosed with colon cancer in January.

I expressed these concerns to my internist last Wednesday, and she did a pelvic exam in which she said she found nothing unusual feeling about my ovaries. She then sent me to get a pelvic ultrasound.

I went and had that done - the technician only did a surface us, not a trans-vaginal one. She said the radiologist who looked at the images felt that they had clear enough images and did not need to go further with a transvag one. I have not had the official results from the us yet, but the technician said she saw a small cyst, and that they would not let me leave with a "life threatening condition"....

So, here I am, a nervous wreck, panicking over my symptoms, and losing sleep. My dr's office did a few blood tests for me (a CBC which she said was normal), and that they would call me Tuesday with the US results.

    you do not have ov/ca. I know these words sound crazy but try to take things as they come. Once you get the results; if you feel you are not getting satisfactory answers, seek another opinion. Ask for a CA 125 bloodtest and a vaginal ultrasound. Please keep us updated.

    Need a diagnosis
    kclara2: Have you been to Dr. Oz's web site? There is a symptom diary for OC on there. Keep a symptom diary and ask to be evaluated by a gyn/oncologist.

    If you can do something that makes your symptoms go away, great! Otherwise, don't stop until you are satisfied that you don't have OC.

    My "situation" grew so fast, it was hard to ignore but I still couldn't believe it was malignant when the ultrasound just said cysts. I went into surgery still convinced that it wasn't cancer but it sure was.

    I hope yours is just a cyst--the complex cysts are the ones that can turn malignant.

    I don't think you have the right story for OC, but I'm not a doctor. Generally, we don't have diarrhea; we suffer instead from constipation. Some of us have lower back pain, but I have never heard "burning hip pain" mentioned.

    Did your doctor do a CA125 blood draw? It's not a a very good diagnostic tool, but if it's elevated into the hundreds or thousands, it's certainly a red flag.

    Many of us had no symptoms, but the most frequent ones are urinary urgency (like you experience with a UTI), increased girth in the waistline, or a suddenly protruding abdomen (many women say they looked 6 months pregnant), and pain just under the sternum (very similar to gallstones).

    The technician who did my ultrasound (pelvic, abdominal, and transvaginal) most definitely let me leave with a "life threatening condition". I had stage IIIc ovarian cancer and a bowel obstruction. They did notify my doctor right away, however. And he was the one who broke the news to me - over the phone, as he was leaving town for a mini-vacation.

    You are your own best advocate. If you are really worried about OC, say to your doctor, "Prove to me I don't have ovarian cancer. Do a CA125 test." Again, that won't actually prove anything, but it should put your mind at ease if it's normal, and give your doctor a heads-up if it's not.
